Got to repair my PB 4000 yesterday!

That is just the spray finish coming off. It is purely cosmetic and won't affect performance. So unless you leave it with the grill off, it is of no concern.

The grey is that actual color of the surround. When you turn up the magnification of the picture, you can see something has been sprayed on it.

I looked into this. Surrounds are sprayed with a variety of products, but the manufacturers usually keep it a guarded trade secret for some reason. Whatever SVS are using is obviously not stable. I suppose it is possible that it might affect performance, but I had assumed it was largely cosmetic, but since it seems to be such a great secret, may be not.
 
So what was wrong after you wiped it off other than what you "heard" were problems with the driver. Seems like a lot of bullshit going here....
I wiped it off. It still bothered me. A new device should be flawless.That was the point
