Does the Dolby Surround Decoder even do anything vs Straight when the source is Atmos? Same question applies to native DTS X mixes.
I am really interested in knowing what all these combinations are doing

Watching Arcane (for the second time). Trying DTS X Neural (up mixing 5.1). It’s very different from the Dolby up mixer. It clearly uses the front height speakers while Dolby doesn’t.
Well they both use the heights. But DTSnx extracts different sounds from the soundtrack to apply to them than DSU does. IME, with four in ceiling top speakers, DTSnx can sometimes seem too aggressive with what it places there. Many times it’s music that gets put there which sounds unnatural to me. If I were testing in your room, I would bump the level of your front heights and try DSU some more. To me it’s more natural, but can sound boring compared to DTSnx. Especially when people want to hear all those speakers work. I felt that way at first. But I played the long game in listening to tons of different content over time and found that I’m often surprised at how much I like DSU. I do use DTSnx periodically just for fun though too.

For me, Atmos or DtsX if it’s on the disk. I don’t have a 4K display either but do have lots of Atmos BD’s with Atmos.
I thought he was just jacking with me but he's being serious I guess. But yeah 4K Blu-ray disc, DTS-X and or Atmos. All other formats including disc it's usually on AI.

I stream most of my movies on Kodi and there are movies out there that are 1080 but have the Atmos soundtrack.

Yep. Lots of them. Problem with some streamers is they won’t allow the immersive track to be used unless it detects a 4K display. Looking at you Netflix…….

I was sort of jacking with you. You made it sound like it had to be 4K visually to be worthy....lol

I haven't found any Blu-ray movies on disc that are Atmos. I really haven't looked that hard. I just go straight for 4K UHD disc.

Lol, that's just for my taste, I buy the movie's I like best on 4K disc only. My 4K collection is substantial now. But I still have like Spartacus on DVD, which I find AI is a great use of it. Of course I still have a bunch of blu-ray movies. I'll stream Netflix, or Tubi free tv, if I like it, I'll try to buy it on 4K disc, if not than Blu-ray disc.
