I've recently owned Yamaha, because I prefer the simple user interface. My lengthy history of audio and video equipment has been weighted more towards Marantz (integrated amps and those slim AVRs) because I prefer Marantz's more highly resolved sound and immense power reserves.

To me they have the best bang for the buck. I just replaced a 16 year old Denon 3802 with a 3500.
I should have bought the Marantz 5013. Deal was to good to pass up. Found out later that I needed the Marantz for the 7.1 analog input for my legacy sacd/dvda that only plays dvda over hdmi.

I think everyone knows that Marantz IS the Best! However, it is also one of the most expensive. Because of that I have been a Yamaha Man for many years. I currently jam on my Yamaha RX-V2700 but I would LOVE to own this Marantz. Even Geiko uses a Marantz in their tv commercials!
