Supercube 4000 vs DN10

Hi,
I'm new to home theater systems so apologize if this is a silly question, but I've read that dual subs is the way to go.

My dilemma is that I have a supercube 4000 and it has been discontinued but I know someone selling one. The other scenario is that I can get two DN 10's which are the newer model subs from Def Tech. The problem with the latter case is that it would be more costly so not sure if that's the way to go. But it is their newer version of subs.

So do I add another supercube 4000 and complete the dual subs or go for two DN 10's?

Deftech is very optimistic with their specs. I used to own a SC4000, and it doesn't get anywhere near what they claim it does. They state a frequency response of 16-200 Hz for the SC4000, but when I measured it I discovered it had no usable output below 30 Hz.

When I said buy a better sub or two, I meant something other than a deftech sub.

What you're missing is that Deftech is very well known for bloated specs when it comes to their speakers and subwoofers. I think you would be much better off switching gears and looking at something from the Monoprice Monolith line or the earlier mentioned Starke sound.

That said, there is little to no redeeming value in any of their previous products that I have found. My 2¢. Avoid their subs at all cost.
I actually had a DT salesperson tell me the same.

Also, there is absolutely no reason to match Speakers to Sub. There is no such thing as Timbre matching at low frequencies like that.
You should absolutely look for the best performing Sub you can allow yourself to afford.

Yeah, may be a bit of a knee-jerk reactiom from me with regards to their newer lines, but in general I totally agree with Ryan. When it comes to subs, get the best you can afford and there's no need to match speakers and subs. Lately Monoprice has really been knocking it out of the park with their subwoofers and I think are among the best value right now.

When it comes to bass frequencies there's no voicing or timbre matching as we hear them differently. What's important is making sure you have enough sub for your room size and good clean measured perfomance.

A lot of folks tend to underestimate what true good clean bass can do for your system. I had my eyes opened when I upgraded from mediocre to good and sufficient for my room size. The perceived difference in clarity and smoothness had an effect on the entire frequency range and really did more to clean up my sound than I expected. It was a nice surprise, and almost as eye opening as when I upgraded my main speakers.

For the price of the DN10s you could get SVS PB1000Pros or HSU VTF2.5s if you have the space for them.

I mistakenly bought into DTs sub line when I set up my HT room. While my SC8000 is not bad and it's been very reliable it just wasn't worth the price.

The only matching you should do is between the Mains and Center, and possibly Surrounds if you want.

Agree with Pogre: good quality Bass, clean, linear and free from distortions is a surprising thing. It is both powerful and subtle. Some people think their Sub isn’t working right because they suddenly don’t hear the distortion in the sound the way they are used too.
That is an important distinction. When most people complain about Subs, it is the rattles and other weird sounds that bother people. While you will still make sh!t rattle with a very good Sub, it’s different and usually happens at much lower frequencies in my experience.

This is true and an interesting observation as I experienced it. When I got better subs that weren't undersized at first I thought something wasn't right because the larger subs actually seemed quieter. What was happening is my previous subs weren't as clean and a little undersized so they were distorting and added noise. Noise in frequencies that are hard to detect for the human ear, but enough that it masked how clean my speakers were playing. I had just never experienced bass that clean in my room before. Once you experience it tho, you get it, and you won't ever wanna go back.

So just curious, your name, "Project SOG". Is SOG an acronym for "Sea Of Green"? If so it's one that I'm quite familiar with and gives us something more in common aside from an interest in audio.
