Onkyo 818 power question and why no atmos ?

Pretty sure atmos existed when I got it .
Is it 135 watts 7 ch all at once ?
Anyone else stuck with obsolete stuff no new surround codex.
I got it 5-6 years ago or so though

It doesnt have enough channels for atmos and adding atmos decoding and support through pre-outs would add quite a bit to the cost (if it was availible).
Unless you have height and /or top layer speakers atmos is just decoded as normal Dolby trueHD (or dolby digital+ if a lossy version from Netflix and such)

It looks to be 135w two channels driven. Dont see any numbers for all channels driven or the capability of the powersupply.

The 818 pre-dates Atmos in avrs....did you buy it at the time of release or later? No, the specs say the 135 wpc is 2ch driven, not all seven, not that that matters much anyways in real use. I'd not pull the specs from a retailer's site but rather the manual, too. The 6 ohm ratings looked odd, they disagree with the manual, think bhphoto got that part wrong.

I have the Onkyo 838. I’m 98.9% positive it was the 1st gen of Onkyo Atmos capable receivers. Atmos was only available on it after an update. It didn’t have Atmos straight out of the box, but was Atmos comparable via future firmware update advertised. 5.2.2 being a 7 channel receiver.

Nope. 818 doesn’t process Atmos. I had an 808 for a long time and it was a BEAST. Not quite the 805 but better than the 800’s after. The 818 is a good AVR. Just not up to date.

With a power amplifier it could run 9 ch but with no atmos because it’s older .
Are avr weak wattage wise going 5-9 ch??

I got it when it was being clearance Black Friday , on new-egg egg [emoji1639] [emoji505] .
I just meant I’m disappointed I got a model or two before atmos release .
Wish I had money to buy a used 808 there so powerful.

The question about new was whether Atmos was generally available at time of purchase....but you should know what features an avr has or doesn't have if you buy it.

It's a relatively high power avr, altho there are some with more. ACD ratings aren't all that meaningful, as the demand on each channel simultaneously is generally not going to happen in real use.

You have pre-outs on the 818 so you can always add more powerful external power amps....more powerful than amp sections of avrs at least.
