1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?

I do not own a pair but I do have a need for powered speakers for my computer sound system or even using them in my home audio system to complete my 7.1 audio

2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

I would think so as long as the internal amplifiers are of good quality

3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

I would defiantly test them out in my home theater system to see if they match my other speakers

4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

I currently dislike everything about my desktop speaker system except for the sub woofer. The speakers are very low fidelity and upgrading them is something I have been wanting to do for a long time

5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Not that important, when I'm listening to music I am usually

  1. Yes, with my computer.
  2. Yes.
  3. Probably they would not match, because the maker of my front speakers does not make powered speakers. I would only consider doing a wireless setup if it were absolutely necessary, which has never been the case in any home in which I have lived.
  4. I use Monsoon computer speakers, and they have the clarity one expects from planar drivers. They are not, however, nearly as good as my speakers in my main audio system. But, they also did not cost anywhere near as much. For what I paid for them, one could not reasonably expect anything better, and one would be lucky to get this good.
  5. That ability is not terribly important to me.

1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?

Just some cheap computer speakers.

2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

Yes, in a room the right size for the speaker and available power.

3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
No. No

4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

Poor speaker = power performance

5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

Very important

Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?
Do not own, but could use for computer system or bedroom TV.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
Possibly. Depends on the power/specs driving them.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
I am skeptical that wireless would sounf as good as passive. I would consider for the right application, assuming quality was there.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
I like the size.
Can't stand the sound quality.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Very important. The "changing LP days" are long gone.

Thanks!

Ken

Contest Questions:
  1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? Yes
If yes, where? One set with computer, one set connected to a TV in a bedroom
  2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver? Yes, for near field listening applications, in larger rooms an AVR's bass management and EQ systems tip the scale in their favor.
  3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Unlikely
Is this something you would consider doing? Not particularly
  4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality) Actually enjoy it a lot
  5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system? Very

No
2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
If comparing comparable drivers/electronics/enclosures - sure
3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
May consider doing, but would probably be of a lesser cost than current passive speakers. They would be in a non-critical listening environment
4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
Don't use desktop computer system
5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Very important

1. No current need for powereed speakers
2. Powered speakers have the problem where the amplification is done at each seaker, not by a shared component, so there is some duplication in hardware, but there isn't anything preventing them from reaching the quality of separates, assuming they are properly shielded.
3. I don't have any plans for wireless surrounds, because I already wired my house for surround. I'd expect the quality to be very close to wired sound, though, for the higher quality wireless systems.
4. My computer audio (2.1, small satelites) is missing midrange. The low end is overwhgelming unless you turn down the sub volume.
5. It is critical to have full control of the system, inclusing songs, source, etc.

Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?
Yes, but just for my computer.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
You need to get to the speaker with a clean audio source which means balanced audio or digital audio. The BEST speakers I've heard in my life were Meridians, so I sure as heck can agree that active speakers can sound good.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
I think people really want some good passive speakers that can work in other rooms of their home, and I would consider it if the quality is good. Yes, I think it could be good. The sound quality is about a manufacturer, not anything else. So, I would consider it, but it would need to come froma good manufacturer making a solid product which worked with everything I owned already.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
Oh, my PC speakers are junk. Cheap, fall of the desk, short FIXED cables. Decent enough sound for PC use, but that's ALL we use them for. We have nice in-ceiling speakers in the office for music listening.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Important enough that I have a Crestron system to do it. Very easy in every room.

I would love to enter the contest. Here are my answers.

1.Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?

Yes, in certain bedrooms and offices

2.In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

It depends, if the design is sound then they should sound as good as passive speakers as long as they get a good audio signal.

3.If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

I would consider doing this if I could get rid of some wires and have good sound as well.

4.If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality) I

I don't like the sound necesarilly, but it is close to my HT so, I can send the signal there.

5.When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

I think that it is good option, but not a deal killer.

Contest Questions:
  1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?

Yes I do have a need as I will be moving to a new house and am trying to decide what to do with my PC speakers. I will have an extra TV in the new house as I will be putting the main HT in the basement and am planning on moving my Aperion 4B's to the Living room along with the subwoofer and receiver. But then my PC/Workstation system will be void of the luscious audio vibes that my 4B's put out. I need some powered monitors or mini-monitors.
  2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

Yes I think its possible but it usually costs more.
  3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

IDK. Normally I would never consider this but if it was implemented well (using a non-standard wireless connection medium) then I would certainly consider it. But in truth how often does one have outlets right where the surround speakers would be placed anyway, in my opinion you would have to install power outlets where the speakers would be. Most people do not have the experience to do this not to mention building codes in certain states prohibiting this, much easier to just run a speaker wire.
  4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

My system's sound quality right now is perfect. I HATE how I have to have an amp sitting on my desk taking up space. However IMO I would miss the remote control ability of the receiver should I move to active monitors.
  5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Songs and source is not very important. Volume is though. I do not like changing the volume via software or keyboard

I have a set in my computer room.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

Can they? Yes. Do they? Depends on how they are built and what amps they have built in. A cheap amp will not give you the same sound as a quality one.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers?

I'd have to hear them to answer that.

Is this something you would consider doing?

Maybe.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

Tough to sound as good as I like, but still be small enough for the desktop. Comprimises would be needed.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

Very. I often leave the music on while I do other things. Who can stop what they are doing all day to switch sources?

Just my crappy computer speakers and they sound horrible. I would love a nice powered replacement for them.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
It all depends on build quality, but I'm sure they can.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
I like wires. I have never had a good experience with wireless connections.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
I have cheap computer speakers than are next on the block for replacement. I hate their sound quality.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
Very Important. I want an app that will work well with my android based phone to control my media player.

I need them in the bedroom. Running crappy HTiB speakers makes the bedroom boring, but late night watching before gettin some is better in bed.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

If the PSB Alphas I used to rock are any indication, definitely.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

I doubt it, what wireless speakers are going to match my Def Tech towers. If so, I'd consider it.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

I use crappy Logitech LSi speakers. Total junk, puny, tinny sound, but I stream all my music to my theater anyway. Now if I had better speakers... :D

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

Very important, I'm a lazy bastid. :D No, seriously, I'm always doing something at home so taking out seconds to switch tracks at the system would be a PiTA. My media streamer and Harmony make it effortless.

Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?
Yes, I have a pair for use with my office computer.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
Yes, they can. (Typically not).

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
In the current market, no. I would love to see additional options available, though. This seems like a no-brainer.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
I like my curent M-Audio powered speakers pretty well for their purpose. it's a 2.0 system and they sound pretty decent although they are lean on bass. They're plain looking, which is better than ugly, and for computer use looks aren't terribly important to me.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?[/LIST]
It isn't important to me. I set things up to listen, and then don't fuss much. I don't like additional remotes, either.

1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?

Yes - I use a JBL 'Creature' computer speakers in the garage for sound - with a Sony Walkman - plays tapes and AM/FM.

2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

Absolutely.

3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

This depends on the nature of the wireless speakers. I use passive speakers and I'm not likely to change that.

4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

Its compact and very easy to use - has a bass module that gives ok lows. In enclosed spaces they don't sound too bad.

5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

I'm easy to please - I generally put on a few albums at a time from the HTPC. I generally don't go changing the music out unless what's playing just doesn't match my mood.

1. Do you currently own or have a need for powered speakers? If yes, where?
No, my computer is setup to run through my receiver to my TV and front speakers.

2. In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?
Yes

3. If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?
I have never heard wireless speakers in HT but have a hard time believing they would sound as accurate.

4. If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)
I do not use this system.

5. When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?
On a scale from 1-10 I would put this at a 7.

Contest Questions:

I don't own or need powered speakers.

In your opinion can powered speakers sound as good as passive speakers paired with an amp or receiver?

I believe powered speakers can be excellent.

If you add wireless surround speakers to your home theater system, will they match the sound quality of your passive speakers? Is this something you would consider doing?

I would love to find some wireless surround speakers that are as good as my wired speakers and reasonably priced.

If you use a desktop computer speaker system, what do you like or dislike about the system? (size, sound, quality)

I've never heard a desktop computer speaker system that was worth getting. Much better to attach a small amp and regular speakers.

When you are listening to music, how important is the ability to change songs and source without walking to your audio system?

Not a simple question. It is nice to not walk to the audio system, but the setup to get to that point can be extensive. For now, I'll walk.
