Bryston Mini T-10 bookshelf speakers!

I ordered some ”bookshelf“ speakers for our bedroom 2-channel setup. These speakers come with the ability to be single amped, bi-amped, tri-amped and ran with an active x-over with the addition of the Bryston BAX-2 (digital x-over). These are a bit different than other active systems in the sense that you can use the preamplifier of your choice (or receiver with XLR outs) and then the signal is fed to the BAX-2 from the pre-out, an ADC-X-over-DAC takes place and the signal is then routed to the respective amplifiers for the tweeters, mids, and woofers. I have them mounted on Target Audio Products MR60 stands. These are my first bookshelf speakers and didn’t really know what to expect. Obviously they can’t pressurize a large room like large floor standers but, I did run them for a bit paired with the RBH SV1212NR subs (2) x-over at 120HZ (same setting I use for the SV831R) and they can play loud enough without distortion as I would ever need. So what do you guys think, obviously it would be preferred to do the x-over in the digital domain however, that would restrict the preamplifier of choice. The BAX-2 comes programmed with the x-over settings from factory for the specific speakers you choose or you can download the settings from the server if you upgrade to a different Bryston speaker.

Bryston's association with Axiom Audio makes me pretty skeptical of their loudspeaker engineering. I would want proof of their capability before taking the plunge on a purchase.

But is it active or passive ? More fuel to feed the myth or truth of bi amp?

Why passive bi amplifying exists???

I can’t seem to tell any difference between being hooked up regular and I’ve tried it twice . why is this feature included on most avrs ? If it’s pretty useless… is it snake oil or performance gains people want to gain ? Is it an industry where features exist that are useless ? Such as bi...

I wouldn’t do the bi-amp tri-amp thing but the active, maybe. You still have to purchase the x-over and that retails for $3,995 and 6 channels of amplification. They come with the plugs for however you want to power them…. They are nice and do sound good. But like I said, they can’t fill up a large room like some floor standers can. yeah I can’t afford them anytime soon maybe never. And at 5-6k I’d consider them high end. But someone with a big budget they might say there cheap.
if you got a decent price under the crazy retail prices then it can make sense that they are basically a mini tower with a big woofer. Should produce good bass output . most people use subs even for big speakers.

I went to the Bryston room at an audio show in Toronto last year and they had a pair of their huge floor standing speakers setup (apologies I don’t remember the model).

I’m sure allot of it was the room (big, open, wood floors) but they sounded horrific. Shrill, no low end and flat midrange with zero emotion. It was so bad that I couldn’t believe they actually kept them playing.

There’s no way I would agree to even let my speakers be auditioned if the floors were hard floors and/or walls were all reflective.

If I were these companies, I would keep an area rug everywhere I go.

But hard floors should still be decent for the bass. So I guess the towers you auditioned just didn’t have much bass.

What about the other rooms for the other speakers from other companies? Were they all hard floors?

There was a mix. Some were hard, some carpeted and some had rugs. Different size rooms as well. Obvious differences in the amount of effort put into the setups.

The Monitor Audio and Focal setups were amazing to my ear. PS Audio, KEF and Paradigm were also solid along with some esoteric brands I hadn’t heard before. Lots of meh as well.

I was just taken aback that a brand with the name recognition of Bryston would have that serve as a demo. There’s no way someone would’ve been buying those speakers based on that demo unless they had more money than brains or concrete in their ears.

I don’t know what to say about the large towers, I believe they’re the Model T-10. The ones that have 4 8in woofers? These? They’re supposed to go down to 25Hz. I know Bryston has an anechoic chamber and they measure their speakers. Don’t know what to tell you.

I do know that in my bedroom, about 2700 cubic feet, it does a nice job for 2 channel music. Nice and punchy bass. It’s not going to make your bones rattle like my RBHs or other big speakers but for what are technically bookshelf’s (43lbs each), I’m happy and the wife likes them. Actually if it was up to her, she‘d have another pair of 8300s for the room.

Look ultra high end and so big that you could go phantom who needs a center??
At 18k possibly more .. lots of competition.

Yeah I think those were the ones they had. Honestly, I’d like to hear them again but in a setup where more attention was given to the room.

Like I said, it’s not that the speakers are necessarily bad. I suspect it was more a case of them just plopping them into a room without any attention given to setup. Just seemed crazy to me given the cost of the speakers and gear that was powering them.

Yea, I’d love to see a review with measurements of them. From like Erin or somebody Shady.. There are reviews of their older/Axiom models but nothing from the new stuff. These are pretty new. New enough that even the hole pattern changed and the wrong plate was sent by the stand manufacturer. If need be, I can stand to be without them for a few weeks while they get reviewed. Lol

One thing that jumped out to me was the woofer. They sure look robust!

With all things being equal, quad 8” woofers should produce equivalent bass to dual 11” woofers, like the Kharma Veyron 2D.

So something must have been wrong. They should have produced a lot of bass even without carpet.

They sound awesome even with floor, ceiling, and walls made of glass - even without amps.
