Stereo - Amplifier or Player more important?

The significance of the amp depends heavily on the speakers. Almost anything will work well with an easy load. Hard-to-drive speakers require a really good amp. All of today's CD players sound great. The differences between them are very subtle, and many people cannot hear a difference at all.

    Studio monitors

My local pro music store had a pair of passive studio monitors for half price (KRK ST-6. Were $400/pr, now $200/pr.) I do not need new speakers, but I couldn't resist. It turns out that I am extremely impressed with the sound. They will not replace my 705s, but they are much better than any...

    DVD players $99 versus $499

Why order something online (and wait for it to be shipped) based on reviews when I can test out a similar product in a store and take it home immediately if I like it?

towers or bookshelf? what is used for what

The 705s offer well over 99% of the sound quality of the 805s for $1000 less.

towers or bookshelf? what is used for what

Some people prefer towers because they like to listen to music in "pure direct" mode, which bypasses the sub and sends everything to the mains.

    DVD players $99 versus $499

I agree. I stay away from ID brands in general for exactly the same reason. If I have never heard of a brand and/or I can't buy it in a store, I am not interested.

    DVD players $99 versus $499

I wouldn't expect there to be any audible difference. Eyes are much more sensitive than ears, so there could be some differences in video quality. I doubt that these would be noticible unless your screen is huge (or you are sitting very close), though.

    Power quality for speakers

I agree. I think that power (including current, headroom, etc.) is the only difference between amps. I don't think that an amp has a "characteristic" sound otherwise (nor that it should.)

    Power quality for speakers

Something else to consider: The designers of budget speakers tend to assume that they will be driven by budget receivers, and therefore make a point of making them easy to drive. High end speakers are much more likely to be inefficient, have low impedence dips, etc.

    Power quality for speakers

That makes perfect sense. Audible differences should be a result of exceeding the Yam's limits. When operating well within the limits of both amps, neither should be better.

Except that, in this particular instance, form is the only reason for doing it at all!:p

Bose Innovations truth, Myth, & Lies

The problem with the Bose direct/reflecting speakers is not the design but the implementation. The same concept executed with high quality drivers (including actual tweeters instead of "full-range" cones.) might well sound excellent. In fact, Shahinian Obelisks do sound excellent and use a...

    Power quality for speakers

Possibly. It was a fairly old unit. Sounded great with the Holography turned off, though.

    Power quality for speakers

I have heard a Carver with Sonic Holography before. It was a pleasant effect, but added audible hiss to the signal, not unlike AM radio static.

    World Music

I am trying to expand my World Music collection. It is hard because there are so many titles out there, and I lack the knowledge to choose among them. I looked through the "20 Albums..." thread and found a few suggestions, but not many. Please list your favorites here. Mine so far: Ali Farka...

    Best portable CD player

Thanks. She has a portable DVD player (with screen), but the battery pack is only good for about two movies, hence the need for a separate CD player. As I said, I will Probably just get her the $40 Philips.

    Musicians Who Suck

Anyone who does not think Phil Collins is a great drummer is probably basing that opinion on his relatively recent material. If they listen to the early Genesis albums (especially The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway), their view is likely to change.

    Musicians Who Suck

I hate to pick on individual musicians who suck, but there are certainly trends that suck. One of the worst is including rap passages in otherwise good songs. A few seconds of rap can spoil a decent rock song just as surely as a teaspoon of vinegar can spoil a gallon of milk. I blame Aerosmith...
