You may be right. I know nothing about how any speaker sounds when played very loud, because that is simply something I never do.

NHT Classic 3 Speakers - Are They That Good?

How much "heart and soul" comes through is a function of the performance and the recording. What I look for in speakers is the ability to reproduce what is on the recording accurately. Describing speakers as having "heart and soul" is voodoo nonsense.

    Van Halen

She was worth it, though. Face it, the lady is hot.:D

    Bookshelf comparisons.

I have heard the Athenas, Infinities, and Polks that you listed. All are good for the price. My preference among those 3 would be the Primus 150s, mostly on the strength of their imaging.

Best speakers for both Music listening AND HT??

True. On the other hand, certain types of speakers such as bipoles and dipoles tend to be better for HT than for 2-channel music. Also, I am happy using a sub for HT, but prefer bass-capable speakers that don't need a sub for stereo listening.

$500 speakers with the best imaging that you know of?

All of the Infinity Primus speakers have outstanding imaging. (They are pretty good in other areas as well, but imaging is their strong suit.)

BT - This Binary Universe (CD-Audio & DVD w/ DTS)

I bought that one after reading about it in Wired magazine. I really enjoy the music, but haven't tried the video yet.

Is this package worth the money?

That is a very low price. It is hard to even find a decent pair of speakers that cheap. If it sounds good to you, then yes it is worth it.

    Is it just me?

Sound quality is highly subjective and depends far more than one might imagine on factors like your mood, energy level, exposure to other sounds that day, etc. I can play a CD on my stereo and have it seem loud, and then later play another cut from the same CD and feel like I need to turn it up...

    The newly reformed KorN.

I am confused. I thought this thread was about musical goodness.:D

    Favorite insults?

That reminded me of Katherine Hepburn describing Marylin Monroe's acting ability: "She covers the whole range of emotions, from A to B."

Looking to build a DVD library!

I bought the version of "2001 a Space Oddyssey" that is part of the Stanley Kubrick reissue collection. It is in a non-anamorphic, ultra-widescreen format that I find unwatchable (about 8" tall on my 34" screen! ) Does anyone know if a better version is available? I love the movie itself.

    want new speakers

I once had some Boston bookshelves that I liked a lot (A60s, I believe.) That was a long time ago, though, and the company has been through many changes since then. I have no idea how their new ones compare.

    Favorite insults?

Do you have any favorite insults? Mine are: "If my dog was as ugly as you, I'd shave its butt and teach it to walk backwards." and "If you rolled your brain down the edge of a razor blade, it would look like a BB rolling down a four-lane highway.":p

I have about 1000 movies and concerts on DVD. Now I have started collecting TV series.:D

    Plugging speaker ports...any harm?

I wouldn't say that either ported or sealed is inherently better. Both have tradeoffs. The designer, however, makes that decision and then chooses all the other parameters accordingly. Second-guessing the designer by plugging the ports is not likely to improve the sound, and may make it worse...

Was Dylan The Best Lyricist Of All Time?

There are some Bob Dylan lyrics that I really enjoy. "Like a Rolling Stone", for one. On the other hand, I just don't understand what a lot of his lyrics are supposed to mean. "All Along the Watchtower", in particular, never made any sense at all to me! (FWIW you can probably guess that I...

Best male singing voice ever...who has it?!

I realize he went downhill later on, but the young Elvis Presley did have a truly amazing voice. I also second the Neil Diamond suggestion. Granted, a lot of his songs were sappy and his stage presence cliche'd, but the man can sing. Another favorite is Peter Gabriel (including his solo work...

How about some UNDERPRICED speaker recommendations?

Are you referring to the Venue series? I have been curious about those since they came out, but Best Buy is a lousy place to audition.

    crackling speakers

The flickering light on your surge protector suggests noisy power. You could try a power conditioner. Loose connections can also cause crackling, and many receivers crackle when adjusting volume.
