I have been impressed by the Athena AS speakers I have heard, but not by their subs.

I don't know where to audition them, but they look intriguing. If they can match the excellent performance/price ratio of the AS series at their (considerably) higher price point, they could be real heavyweight contenders.

I have always been in favor of using the lowest possible crossover setting that will not leave a gap.

Be careful using that boombox amp! It probably has way less wattage than the speakers can handle, but you could still damage them if you drive it into hard clipping.:eek:

I agree that the 805s sound better (though IMO not $1000 better.) My point was that the difference does not include more extended or powerful bass.

The 705s have almost exactly the same bass response as the 805s, though the 805s do have a more refined sound.
