    Best portable CD player

The application will be my mom's cabin. I found some surprisingly good portable speakers for her (from the makers of the "T-Amp"), and now she needs a player to go with them. I may just get Philips, as I have generally been happy with their products.

Once again: what are you listening to now?

Awesome new discovery: Hazmat Modine. They have a sound as rustic as the antique harmonica on the cover of their CD "Bahamut". Down and dirty blues. jazz, gypsy music and many other styles blended with outstanding musicianship. Sounds like some ancient record played on the Victrola in your...

    Best portable CD player

Is there such a thing as a "best" portable CD player, or are they all about the same? I have noticed that typical prices are around $30-$40, but they go as high as $90 and as low as $10. Does more expensive=better? Any specific make/model recommended?

    Is M&K Gone?

I used to see M&K ads every time I picked up an audio-related magazine. I hardly ever see them anymore. Never heard their speakers, but they had a good reputation.

Center speaker for boston acoustics A70s

Since you have 5 of them, why not use one as the center? I doubt they make a matching center any more, as those are long discontinued. (Great speakers, though.)

Cheap Sony speakers worth the $?

UE is advertising closeout Primus 160s for $160/pr. If any of our local stores have some left, that will be my recommendation. I have listened to those, and I think they are much better than the price would suggest. (The 250s are even better, but I don't know if I can talk my friend into...

Cheap Sony speakers worth the $?

I agree. I heard the M20s. They would be worth the $100/pr sale price, but not the $220 that CC gets for them. I will have to go listen to the Sonys, to see how bad they are.

Cheap Sony speakers worth the $?

Yes, it's those. The X-LS would be great if I could convince him that decent bookshelves are better than crappy floorstanders. Of course, those are $220 even before shipping, and would require stands.

Was Dylan The Best Lyricist Of All Time?

...and then there is Neil Peart (of Rush.):D "Philosophers and plowmen, each must play his part, to sow a new mentality closer to the heart. The blacksmith and the artist, each practiced in their art, must forge a new reality closer to the heart. Whoa whoa you can be the Captain, and I will...

    B&W 804S upgrade to B&W 803S

To me, the reason for a larger speaker (all else being equal) is bass response. Since your sub makes this a moot point, I can't see it being worth the $ for you.

Cheap Sony speakers worth the $?

A non-audiophile friend of mine has his heart set on a pair of floorstanders, and a minimal budget. BB has some Sony's for $150/pr, and that is as cheap as I have seen. Are they worth it at that price, or would he just be flushing his money away?

Star Trek original series DVD collection

Oh, I agree. I absolutely love the original series. The flaws and cheesy effects are part of its charm.:)

Star Trek original series DVD collection

Some of my favorite things include the computers (who knew that 23rd century computers would be far clunkier than 1980s computers? ) and the comunicator earpieces that Spock and Uhura wear (bluetooth, anyone?)

Star Trek original series DVD collection

The standard DVD version is already way more revealing than the show itself was made for (easy to recognize painted backdrops, paper mache' rocks, etc.) We really don't need to see it in hi def.:D

Quietest Detail in a DVD scene

There is a restaraunt scene in "What Lies Beneath" with two couples having two simultaneous conversations across a table. As the camera shifts from one to the other, you hear each conversation in turn, like a simulation of the "cocktail party effect". This scene really impressed me the first...

Star Trek original series DVD collection

I bought all three seasons in a single box. (Each season has its own "tricorder" case.) I am really enjoying watching them again. I was a Star Trek addict as a kid.

Monitor Audio R250 vs Klipsch RVX-42

The Klipsch sound is unique. As you said, you either love it or hate it. Since you are among those who love it, I think it is what you should stick with. (Personally, I would choose MA, but that is because I do not like the Klipsch sound.)

    Van Halen

Good summary, and it agrees with how I feel about them. Was anything by Van Hagar ever half as much fun as "Ice Cream Man", for example? (FWIW I was never a Sammy Hagar solo fan either.)

    America - Here & Now

I thought their "new" CD was a greatest hits package. Does it have new material on it also?

    Van Halen

I was one of the many teenagers (a long time ago) who had her poster. She was so sexy that it bordered on pornography, in spite of her being fully clothed.:D
