    picking a CD player

Some DVD players have excellent CD sound through analog outs, also.

What Do New Receivers Really Have?

I changed the source at the same time, from an Onyo DX-C390 to a Denon DVD 557. (Nothing wrong with the Onkyo, far from it, but I wanted a pair of components that matched visually.) Cables, speakers, room, and source material remained constant. All I can say is that the Denon pair sounds better...

    Denon 557 vs. 1730

Good lord, what a doofus! You set him straight, I hope?

    Another dumb question about speakers

Not only would that not increase the performance of the center, it would probably make it worse (maybe even a lot worse.) I never recommend trying to second-guess a speaker designer.

    Bookshelf vs. Floorstanding?

I had some very expensive bookshelves (B&W 705s.) I sold them and bought floorstanders for about 1/2 as much MSRP (paid less on sale. Boston VR2s.) I like them better. Better bass, stronger dynamics, more of a live feel, and just simply a "bigger" sound overall.

    Is plasma dead?

In a 10' square bedroom with the back wall covered in bookshelves (which require an access aisle.) If I bought a flat screen, I could increase the distance by the difference in thickness between it and my CRT, but that is all. (Of course, a 42" at 74" has exactly the same viewing angle as a 34"...

    Black Snake Moan

Ricci is gorgeous, but they made her look really rough in this. Great movie, though. I was especially impressed with the acting.

    Is plasma dead?

The 34" seems large enough to be immersive and movielike with 16:9 material. Other aspect ratios make it seem a bit small, though (especially ultra-widescreen.) I hate "stretch" mode and will not use it.

    Denon 557 vs. 1730

I am now using the 557 as a CD player, and I am pleased with the sound. It does not play DVD audio, so that could be the only difference.

    Is plasma dead?

As I said, I have considered going larger. So far, however, the picture quality just isn't good enough on any large screen that I have seen. I also don't have the space to sit much farther back than 5'.

    Bagpipe

My dad likes bagpipes. He also used power tools without hearing protection for years, so he is half deaf. (I'm not saying there is a connection, but I'm not saying there isn't, either.:D)

    Is plasma dead?

Are you attempting (unsuccessfully) to make a point? I have merely described the differences that I see.

What Do New Receivers Really Have?

Denon receivers, including my new entry-level 2-channel model, use something called "signal level divided construction". I don't know how it works, but I am convinced that it does. I hear really minute subtleties that I couldn't with my old Carver integrated.

    Single-drawer better than changer?

I ended up getting a Denon DVD player with a single drawer (for playing CDs.) I am happy with it, but hope the drawer mechanism doesn't wear out (After all, I open/close it 6 times as often as my old changer!)

The Last Mimzy - LFE !

Watched over the weekend and enjoyed it. Silly, of course, but quite entertaining.

    Favorite drummers

I am not normally very sensitive to compression/clipping. CDs that others have complained about in threads about the "loudness wars" often sound fine to me. Snakes and Ladders is an exception. I do hear a lot of compression and clipping on it, and it reduces my enjoyment of it considerably. Too...

    Is plasma dead?

5 feet (which is actually a bit closer than what is usually recommended for a 34".) I can see artifacts in plasma and LCD from much farther away than that. Also, I watch in a darkened room, and the CRT black level is the best by a big margin.

    It's a SICKNESS I tell you...

Instead of buying the NADs online, I ended up buying a pair of Denons (DVD557 and DRA37 receiver) locally. They also have the newness factor, the good looks, the impressive specs, and the matching but for half the price. I would have been happy for those reasons even with no improvement in...

    It's a SICKNESS I tell you...

I seriously need neither a new CD player nor a new integrated amp, much less both. I am extremely skeptical that either of these would give me much audible improvement over what I have now (at least without getting into much higher-end territory than I can afford.) In spite of this, I am leaning...

Massive closeout sale on Boston Acoustics

Deep discounts at CC, and possibly elsewhere. These are great speakers, and worth way more than MSRP. On sale, they are a steal. I got my VR2s for $460/pr, and they are normally $800!:)
