"Upconversion" through component video
In that case, an upconverting DVD player would have no advantage, so it's a moot point. (The more I consider Blu Ray, the more certain I am that I don't want it. I have too much invested in regular DVDs to make them look bad by comparison.)

Floorstanding speakers on a budget?
Maybe they have improved in recent years. The Cerwin Vegas of old were "keg party" speakers: loud, powerful, indestructable, and crappy sounding. Great for dancing, terrible for serious listening.

I second that. I bought a pair of VR2s, and they sound great! Normally $800/pr, on sale for $460, so one heck of a good deal.

CD or DVD Player Recommendation.
The "downstream" components, and especially the speakers, make a vastly larger difference. All reasonably competent CD and DVD players (which I have no doubt the Denon is), sound indistinguishable to me.

It went right over my head. I have very little technical knowledge, and what I do have is confined to audio.

Center Channel
I had trouble finding a center that blended well with my mains. I tried phantom center instead, and found that I preferred it. I haven't used a center speaker since. (I always sit in the sweet spot, though.)

Favorite drummers
I met a woman in Montana whose cousin plays drums in REO Speedwagon. When they upgraded their equipment, her 4th grader got his old kit. Now that was a present!:)

So it is not a hardware issue, it is a legal issue? I am not sure if I even want to try and find a way around that. (I have zero ability at "hacking".)

In the unlikely event that I can actually find the owner's manual, I will check.:o I don't remember reading anything like that when I was originally setting it up, though.

"Upconversion" through component video
Hmm. Well, it sounds like I can pretty much forget that idea wihout getting a new TV. (And, the only way I would get a new TV would be if it were larger, which is not practical because of my limited viewing distance. Catch 22.:() Edit: I typed this before BMXTRIX posted. Blu Ray could be worth...

"Upconversion" through component video
Can HD-DVD or Blu Ray be sent through component, or do they also require HDMI? I have far too many DVDs to buy them all again in one of the new formats, but a few things would be worth it (eg Planet Earth, The Fifth Element.) As mentioned, the TV (Philips HD tube) accepts up to 720p, not 1080p...

"Upconversion" through component video
I found one listing, for something called the "Helios H4000", but is has gotten very poor reviews. The sad thing is that a TV identical to mine but with the addition of HDMI became available within a couple of months after I bought mine! I love the picture, but have never seen it in its...

"Upconversion" through component video
All of the "upconverting" DVD players I have seen are designed to output 1080i through HDMI. My TV accepts up to 720p through component video inputs. Are there any DVD players that will do this?

Survery: screen size vs distance
That is not surprising, but it is unfortunate. I have kicked around the idea of a 42", but in my HT room it would not be possible to sit more than 6' from it. (Ah well, the viewing angle for my 34" at 5' is exactly as wide as a 42" would be at 6'2" anyhow.)

I have both DVDs, both studio CDs, all the solo CDs, Haley's solo DVD, and have seen them live. You might say I am a fanatic.:)

If you like Enya's style as well as her voice, listen to Celtic Woman (especially Lisa and Meav.) Afterward, you will realize that Enya is not as amazing as you thought.

Survery: screen size vs distance
I watch a 34" widescreen tube from 5'. It usually seems big enough to be involving, but can seem a bit small when watching material with a very wide aspect ratio, because then as much as 1/3 of the screen may be black bars. SD material looks great on it, but I don't think I could go bigger (or...

I agree that those are all great voices, but I hardly think that they all go unrecognized. Stevie and Sade, in particular, are highly regarded. (By the way, Susanna Hoffs' collaboration wih Matthew Sweet, Under the Covers, is a great CD.)

Favorite drummers
You have hit on a deep truth there. For we non-drummers (especially those of us who can barely clap along with the beat) any reasonably competent drumming seems like magic. If a drum solo is fast, loud, and involves polyrythms we are most impressed.:p
