drink 2-4 beer before I need something a little tastier. Then it is rye and coke for the rest of the night.
I first visited Venezuela about 6 years ago. Havana Club rum is available there, so I bought a bottle and got some Coke. Add a little bit of limon (lime) and kick back on the hammock underneath the palm trees.
Back in the '80s (I think it was the late '80s), Coca-Cola came out with "New Coke." This was around long enough that most supplies of the original product were used up, and it caused a lot of complaints. They then brought out "Classic Coke," which was supposed to be the original recipe.
Classic Coke was not the same as the original. The original used cane suger, which is more expensive in the US than the corn syrup that other soft drinks used. So, they came up with a way to hoodwink people and switch to corn syrup - the New Coke/Classic Coke campaign.
Venezuela is a sugar-producing country, specifically cane sugar. Corn syrup is more expensive there. So, Coca-Cola never switched to corn syrup there.
I talked to one of my relatives who works for Coca-Cola. She had never heard anything about New Coke or Classic Coke. They've just been making the same product year after year.
So, you take some Coke that's the same as Coke was 50 years ago, you take some Havana Club rum, add some limon, and you have a real Cuba Libre - just like they served in Havana back in the day.
It really does taste different, and IMO better.
