Rock and Metal Headz Thread

I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread yet. But now that I read it, I realize that you guys enjoy some older stuff (as you are usually older than me). I thought I would find more people that connect to me. Most of the names you say I don't even know of. And I'm really surprised that really good bands nowadays haven't been said yet.

On a side note, IMO I don't consider emo/screamo having talent because they just bash on musical instruments and a microphone. Sure they play fast, but for me it is not having talent. Any band who wears makeup and ties to me is not worth my attention. I have seen a show with a couple of them along with Killswitch Engage in Ottawa and I nearly left the place. I'm glad I stayed for KxE though.

For my part, I like something more "melodic", when you can really discern a song and tell "hey, this is XYZ".

I only divide my tastes in two, which are:

1. Softer metal/rock (which are habitually commercial):
- Sevendust
- Shinedown
- Korn (older stuff only)
- Disturbed
- Godsmack (older stuff too)
- P.O.D.

2. Harder metal/rock (a little more underground):
- All That Remains
- Lamb Of God
- God Forbid
- Trivium
- Killswitch Engage
- Demon Hunter
- In flames
- Twelve Tribes
- Soilwork

Gimpy - I'm not trolling just messing around, relax.

I have a couple old ones for you if you're interested...PAW (Dragline) and Prong (Cleansing). One of my favorites, and originally local, is Clutch. Forgive me if they've been mentioned before but those 3 just popped into my head.

Sheep sweet.... pendulum

It's rare but I agree with Gimpy. I don't want to see Joe cold-bed or any other music snobs posting in this thread if they're not going to contribute.

And for the last time, stop arguing over music. You're never going to agree.

Now listen to some awesome Pendulum.

Not rock, but awesome.

Sheep Pendulum is freakin killin love it.......

List what you like. Sounds like we have a lot in common, musically anyway.

Haha its funny how Metal or Heavy Metal as a definition is thrown around.

I see some "veterans of the world" saying they listen to Judas Priest or ACDC or Black Sabbath. These days that would qualify as classic rock or hard rock.

In terms of todays "Metal" I do listen to some slow CoB songs, Blind Guardian, Metallica, TOOL (though its not as Metal as one might think), Trivium. Good stuff. I hate it when they scream every word though, which is why CoB is a bit on my "You need to change" side.

I'm like you. I like screaming but not always.

Have you heard of Killswitch Engage, All That Remains and Twelve Tribes? They are a mix of scraming/singing. You can actually hear the song too. Not just bashing on everything around you.

Right on Mark - the thanks was for this one. One of my favorite bands of all time, I've been a huge fan since the Pitchfork 7" first hit the scene, right up through their current album. Rarely have I missed them live when they've come to a venue near me, and I've seen them in Clifton Hills, NY; St. Petersburg, FL; Norfolk, VA - often multiple times in each place.

Absolutely one of the best bands in existence.

Um, OK. Almost every band I listed there is more technical (maybe with the exception of Porcupine Tree). As for fast, last time I checked, Dillinger Escape Plan's guitarist wasn't doing any sweep picking or tapped arpeggios, I didn't notice too many polyrhythms on the drums. I don't know what do you consider technical? You obviously know better than me.

Oh and I love it when people roll their eyes at me. It shows maturity.
Listen to DEP's Calculating Infinity when you get a chance. It might change your mind. :)

Here are some other crazy, ridiculously complex bands that have fallen on my radar over the years:

- The Locust
- Ghengis Tron
- The Swing Kids
- Converge
- Into the Moat
- Napalm Death (okay, maybe not so much on the "pick-sweeping and appregios", but gets a mention based on sheer brutality and force)
- The Red Chord
- Fantomas (try them on for size and see how they fit...they are not for everyone for sure :D)

At least those are a few names that come immediately to mind. Please feel free to check any of them out if you like.

BTW, I can't believe I've missed this thread either - MinusTheBear, Sheep, Joe Schoe, Mark - we can all swap some good notes here; seems like may have a lot to talk about.

As for me, I got my first taste of hard, heavy music with old Motley Crue, Maiden and AC/DC. From there I got into punk rock, and eventually hardcore, but because of my initial metal exposure, gravitated towards the "heavier" bands in the early hardcore scene: Judge, Slapshot, Sick of It All, for example.

Music - I love it all, and have opened myself up to a lot more than metal/hardcore, etc. the older I get, but always manage to stay in tune with my roots. :D

I do like Godsmack, although lately I feel as if they're a one-trick pony. I've kind of grown bored with their sound, although the dueling drummer scene from the video kicks a heap of a$$. :)

Good stuff here - good thread.

Got all three albums dude. :D

Here's a few for you though.

Achilles; Acme (slightly dated Belgium hardcore/metal); The Hope Conspiracy; Integrity; Heavy Heavy Low Low; The Handshake Murders; Coalesce; Botch; Architect; Some Girls; Made out of Babies; Dead Hearts...

Give me long enough and I'll have you busy sitting in front of iTunes. :D

LOL. I don't know how many times I listened to the Passive Restraints album while drunk in my bro's barracks at 7th SF Bragg...ugh, the rest of the evening was usually forgetable. Clutch is a great band band LIVE but I dropped off the map after the Elephants. Suggestions?

Elephant Riders is probably the weakest of their efforts, so I wouldn't necessarily blame you for taking your interests elsewhere. Fact is, they have changed a great deal since Passive Restraints and Transnational Speedway League came out - the self titled album really showcased this evolution into a new sound for the band. But they missed the mark with Elephant. After that, they hit their stride again, with the new sound. Much more blues oriented, but still heavy as hell, still rocks and is still good ol' Clutch. :D

Give Pure Rock Fury and Blast Tyrants a listen - it's no Passive Restraints, but represents Clutch on a whole new level.

Speaking of Passive... I remember my friends and I starting mosh pits in a buddy's bedroom while listening to this one... ah, the good ol' days. :D

Thanks Halon. I'll check those out since I have a couple bucks leftover on my FYE card. I've been really digging Doug Marsch from Built to Spill lately but clearly not a part of this genre per se :)

Halon451,

Did you see my Protest The Hero link? I would give them a shot, considering what you listen to now, they would probably fit in.
