I have listened to a lot of metal. My two favorite bands are The Dillinger Escape Plan, this is a hardcore metal band and they are CRAZY, they are super musicians, I find their music hard to follow sometimes because it is so fast and technical. Another favorite of mine is a band called Isis, their albums called Oceanic and Panopticon are amazing.
I tried listening to Dillinger Escape Plan and just couldn't do it. It sounded like jackhammers to me.

The first album I ever bought was by Black Sabbath and it just launched me into BOC, Montrose, Mohagany Rush, Robin Trower, Scorpions, UFO, Van Halen, and most of the classic hard rock of the 70s (not sure when it started being called "heavy metal."
That's what I find interesting (and worthless) about genre classifications. I don't think any of those would be considered 'heavy metal' nowadays. The classifications morph over time. Van Halen is now 'classic rock' and Black Sabbath is 'hard rock'. Dio (and Rainbow which included Dio in the early years) is one of my favorite bands and they are no longer considered heavy metal but usually listed as simply 'hard rock' on music websites.

What's in a name? I hope to listen to Dio when I'm old and gray. Maybe I'll end up being the crotchety old man saying 'you kids don't know metal...let me tell you about back in my day." :)

Heh. I forgot about Rainbow. And though many don't consider Sabbath metal (I certainly never did) a lot of metal musicians point back at them as the ones who started everything.

Not to sound like an elitest, but Dillinger Escape Plan is hardly fast or technical in the realm of all the amazing metal musicians out there.

That started with the line "heavy metal thunder" (referring to motorcycles) in the song Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf.
So that's where it came from? I usually think 'Won't you take that ride, ride, ride on heavy metal, it's the only way you can travel down that road...'.

Bonus points to anyone that recognizes that lyric (I know too easy).

In the 80s, I moved to Metallica, Megadeth, Metal Church, and many of the metal hair bands.

In the 90s, I found Dream Theater, Rob Zombie, Porcupine Tree, and Linkin Park.

Now I've found Arch Enemy and Arise and Ruin.

Never cared much for Godsmack.
Many familiar names here! Not sure what genre Linkin Park is in, but I have some of their stuff and really like it.

From the Movie Heavy Metal! one of my favorites!

You know I think they classify Linkin Park as 'rap metal' (whatever that means). I had the album Hybrid Theory but I really only like the song In the End so I bought the CD single with the studio and live version of In the End.

There were already enough pigeonholes to force people into way back when I was in high school. All these subgenres and sub-subgenres make things that much worse.:(
Also, it forces bands to be more narrow in their approach. A band like BOC played a much wider spectrum of styles than a "metalhead" audience today would accept.

Agreed, assuming BOC == Blue Oyster Cult. A couple of songs that seem to come on a lot in WinAmp even though I have it on random play are 'Shooting Shark' and 'I Love the Night'. Neither would qualify as heavy metal even though BOC may have been classified as heavy metal at one time. I like them both. I actually appreciate when bands can break out of their target genre and do something different that I actually like.

I'm with you MDS, take for instance AC/DC. They have some slow songs that kinda bluesy...and I like it.

Reccommend me some bands please:D
Sure thing: ;)

Symphony X, Dream Theater (not really metal), Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Kings X, Angra, Platypus, Porcupine Tree (also not really metal), Spocks Beard, Fates Warning, andromeda.

Prog metal isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it sure is mine! Enjoy!

Any death metal or black metal fans out there?
I absolutely love Opeth, but I have some trouble with most black/death metal. I get tired of the same vocals all the time, I like how Opeth changes constantly.

I don't seek it out deliberately, most of those Cookie Monster vocals are just silly, but I do like Opeth, and I discovered Arch Enemy and Arise and Ruin by accident.

Lots of timing changes and complex guitar and drum work. The kick drums have some good weight to them too.

You might like Threshold. Not too many people have heard of them. I also like Symphony X and Dream Theater.
