haven't updated for some time ...
but because i've dismantled my HT system (renovated it to be my kid's new room) i had to upgrade my bedroom system

i've upgraded the following:
from KEF Q1 (moving this to my PC setup) to SVS MBS-02
from DIY Dual Infinity Kappa to SVS SB13Plus (omg, i can't believe i went that long without the very low frequencies) - but the Kappa made for a very good stand for my desk fan.

i don't have an overall system pic because it's totally a mess :)

Yo Mike!

I'd like to hear your impressions of the SVS's compared to the Kefs. I almost bought those Kef's bigger brothers before I decided to try the Ascend Accoustic's 340se/170se's and now I have SVS MTS-01/MCS-01's. (still using the 170se's as surrounds)

i couldn't do A/B tests, but based on memory (as in listen, disassembly, assembly, listen)

the KEF's sound "lighter" "thinner" "seems to be more detailed" i guess due to the higher sensitivity. even when i turn up the volume, the M's don't seem to reach the "KEF sound", the M's sound "more solid" though "fuller". [i couldn't fit 'chocolatey' and 'danceable' in there]

in a word, i would hazard that the KEF Q1 is brighter while the M's are neutral pushing warmer.

the M bookshelf is ginormous and spectacularly heavy. the Q1 pair is probably lighter than a single MBS. that said, i've A/B'ed the Q1 even with a Monitor Audio GS10 and i did not feel i was missing a bit.

your 01's will actually be less bright and less flat than the 02, but sport the 200usd scanspeak tweeters. (MBS-01 is flat to 17khz, the MBS-02 is flat to 19khz and sans the peak and dip near the cx point)

i have not reviewed the MTS spec sheet (which is posted at the svs website, i requested the MBS-01 spec sheet from SVS because i was choosing between the MBS-01 and 02)

I would have guessed the same. Kef's being more forward and brighter than the SVS's.

Thanks for excluding "chocolatey" :)

i just installed the KEF Q1 in my PC setup. my PC is 2.0 and my bedroom is 2.1 ...

WTH, the KEF's sound so thin, apparently, they only excel with a sub.
when it's trying to play bass, it sounds like mumb mumb mumb

sigh. i don't have the space for a sub or a receiver (though i have two extra receivers)

goodbye Gloss Black SB13Plus

hello temporary mistress PC12NSD

although the cylinder takes up less floorspace, it's not able to tuck in below the absorption panel ... anyway, this is just to tide me over til my Oak finish SB13Plus arrives in January :D

Looks good, but why don't you like the gloss sub, I think it looks better than any of the other finishes, but that's just my opinion.

it does. but i fear the gloss finish in the sub's location because it's a path i walk through everyday, i'm afraid of scratching it.

i'm also hoping the Oak finish is closer to my beech floor.
(i have swatches, but the swatches never match the actual finish)

...and once again ... The Empire Strikes Back...:p

Hey Mike,

congrats on your new toys! Would like to know how much of a difference between these 2 SW's, performance wise, though.

well for music, the SB13 trounces the PC12NSD. for movies, i have to compare the performance again, i'm thinking the PC12NSD wins, but it might not be by much.

and i don't think i like the phallus in my bedroom :D

i think beech (floor) and oak (sub) are close enough ...
i'm very happy how it turned out :)

yeah, if the curtains weren't there, i'd probably have a ported sub as well :)

I havent read this whole thread so maybe i missed it but what are you going to do with the piano black SB13P? Thats a beautiful sub, i prefer the black myself but the oak looks nice with your floors. Are you moving the black one to a different system or is it somewhere else in the room running dual?

i sold it :)

Chicken or the egg. Get a ported sub, and the curtains probably won't end up being there. :)
i had a glimmer of hope last night ... as i took a measuring tape to the Sb13 ... 17" deep. ultra 27" deep. that's just 10"es!!
woohoo!

then i remembered the width. poof. :(

This has to be the only place where grown men are concerned about each other's curtains.
