I have been rebuilding my home audio for about the last 2 years... After taking a some what extended break from home audio, as a primary hobby.
I decided that my low end needed work (the 4, 8" woofers in the polk r700, front mains, and the two 10" woofers in the rear surrounds together, just were not reproducing the low range that I knew was there. The sound was good and smooth but something was lacking.
Rather than resurrecting the old, refrigerator size, DIY 15 inch woofer based sub (built from an old Audio Magazine "how to" article), I figured that home audio technology should have caught up, since the 1970s, so I inventoried the available sub woofer choices and settled on a more reasonable sized sub than the DIY 15"... Don't get me wrong the RSL-12s is still a relatively large box but it less than half the size of the DIY 15 incher. (low frequencies need relatively large boxes for resonance...).
This sub is the size of a quite large end table (and I fully intend to use it as such; with a marble top, after I re-arrange the living room). The limited number of available positions for the sub,due to it's size, meant that I dropped it in a narrow end of the living room between the Left main and the flat screen... The, included, carpet glides were much appreciated as they allow one person to move this, heavy, sub around.
The, antique, marble slab top is best moved separately... I don't know where a person could buy one.
After spending this last weekend with this sub; I decided that its a good complement to my other equipment and , even though I haven't yet optimized it is is still an audible improvement; for both movies and music.
I highly recommend it.
Enjoy!
