This is definitely a sickness!

This topic forced me to add it up. I have spent over $10K in the last 9 months and all I wanted to do was replace my old and failing Bose LS 12 system with a decent surround sound system. Now I’m seriously contemplating spending $125K for a room addition and Hifi Ht setup. Thanks Audioholics (I guess  ).

im still in college too, so i have to slowly buy parts..

overall ive probobly spent about 3 grand. realistically, im looking to spend another 2 - 3 grand on this system. for the qs8 surrounds, stands if needed, component racks, and a tv rack, maybe the m80 fronts and another amp, and maybe an svs of hsu sub.

then ill just start working on another one. a much better one.

I hate to say it but, if you are going to add all of the audio and video equipment together, the $12K level is a little low. $15K or $20K might have been a better cutoff.

Agreed i mean as soon as my wife turns her head i will be getting new surround and prescence also an emotiva amp. And this doesn't include the furniture i bought for this room recliners and reclining couch. And i know i am on the cheap end of things.

I can not say how much I spent for fear my wife will check through my bookmarks and find this site. She thinks I got everything on ebay for a few hundred bucks.

I had to do an estimate not long ago for added insurance, so I got a pretty good idea of replacement cost at about $25,000-$30,000. Speakers are hard to determine since they are all DIY, but the electronics alone are at least 15K and if I add the wiring and cables in my attic, they alone would be about 5K. adding up my cabling receipts and materials was a shock, I had no idea they would be that much, full automation is expensive.

I've been through a lot of stuff, but it's funny that what I've really done
is simplify the whole system.

For front end sources, I use a

Pioneer DVD-578AS (incredibly reliable and beautifully sounding)
Samsung (Comcast) DVR for TV
PC - > Apple's Airport Express for wireless digital audio (sounds better than the DVD/CD player, which really puzzles me.)

Preamp is a gorgeous Anthem AVM20

Amp is Behringer EP1500 (Best amp I've ever heard at any price, and it costs $250)

B&W 801 IIIs

It might not be the cutting edge, but it makes damn beautiful music!

Best,
John
