3) What would you upgrade 1st in your home theater system?- Speakers.

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain. 1- since my subs are basically the size of furniture I dont feel as if they need to match the speakers at all so I went with a finish to match my furniture instead.

1) What are your home theater system components, including manufacturers and finishes / colors?

Marantz AV8003 pre, MM8003 amp in black
Triad Inwall Gold/6 LCR all around with dual Inwall Silver/15 subs, painted black to blend into the walls
Oppo BDP-83SE, Toshiba HD-A35, Lexicon RT-20 all in black
Berkline seating, also black

2) What would you change in your home theater system?

There is nothing that really needs to change. If I get to choose though, I would like to have a 50-60" plasma on the wall for basic watching, and then a drop down motorized screen to cover that when using the projector. Right now I have a fixed screen on the wall, and it would be nice not to have to fire up the PJ everytime we want to watch something.

3) What would you upgrade 1st in your home theater system?

I've been wanting to put together an HTPC in that room, but it has to be stable and simple enough for the family to use, so I haven't had time to do it.

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain.

10: Using in-wall speakers is a bit different, but the concept is the same. Everything needed to match and i my case blend in to the walls and disappear. Regular in room gear would be similar.

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? 5 Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain. It doesn't necessary have to match but should be compatible. I want cherry and black and I do not know if they have to match - the same color or if they regardless of the color of the speakers, a black sub will probably work...

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain.

If the subwoofer finish doesn't match perfectly I would opt for a black subwoofer. 5.

1. Yamaha RX-v 1600
Destination Audio EF30T for L/R; Destination Audio EF30C; and Klipsch S-2's for surrounds
Klipsch RW-12 sub
Sony 5 disc dvd/sacd; an old HTPC; on occasions I hook up the wii for company.
Not much AV furniture, some of it is sitting in a Mitsubishi DLP TV stand The computer and some other stuff is under a chair that sits in the corner of the room.
I have a monster stage 2 power conditioner of some sort that I bought for $30 mounted to the back of the tv stand.
2. I really need an AV cabinet on the side wall. Right now my living room looks like a collage students dorm room with all my electronics just sitting around. I have shopped around but finding one deep enough is out of my price range.
3. The first thing I would change in my home theater would be my surrounds. I need something that would blend with my front speakers better. I would really like those "Intimus 5DB Dipole/Bipole Surround Speakers."
4. I think That a sub should blend into the room not match the speakers. Although in most cases that means all the speakers should look similar. I would say it is 8. If the sub is part of the furniture, like most in-room speakers are, its important that they match. But if it is tucked away than it doesn't matter at all.

10th Ann. Aperion System

1) What are your home theater system components, including manufacturers and finishes / colors?

Onkyo TX-SR 750 (black); Sony PS3 60G (black); Sony 10" 100W Sub (black); Sony HTIB cubes LCR + L/R surround (silver); Motorola HD-DVR (silver)

2) What would you change in your home theater system?

The speakers are all that are needed to complete my system. The Sony's are left over from my 1st "home theater" - a receiver and 5.1 speakers for just over 100 bucks. Cheap, but the Onkyo makes them sound awfully good for only being 2.5 inches!

3) What would you upgrade 1st in your home theater system?

Definitely the speakers, another 5.1 setup. Preferably bi-ampable L/R for listening to my small but growing collection of .flac files in 2-channel.

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain.

9? I don't want to attract too much attention to the subwoofer, so my preference tends to be toward a black finish. I absolutely love the look of wood grain or high quality veneer, but it doesn't fit with the style of our espresso colored furnishings. Maybe one day if I have a game room I can return to that style, but for now all my speakers need to be black.

1.) EQUIPMENT
-Sherwood Newcastle P-965 Pre/Pro and A-965 amp separates (brushed aluminum)
-6.2 system: Paradigm Monitor 11 v3 (L/R), Paradigm cc-370 v3 (Center and rear center), Paradigm Monitor 3 v3 (Surrounds) - all speakers are black
-2x Outlaw LFM-1 Plus subs (black)
-Oppo BDP-83 SE Blu-ray (black)
-Microsoft Xbox 360 (white)
-DirecTV HR22 HD DVR satellite receiver (black)
-Hitachi 60" Ultravision 60VS810 LCD Projection TV (1080i - black)
-Logitech Harmony One universal remote
-Monster HTS 2600 power conditioner (black with brushed aluminum)
-Monster AVS2000 voltage stabilizer (black with brushed aluminum)
-Velodyne SMS-1 (black)
-Equipment is placed in a BDI Triple Wide Storage cabinet (espresso finish)

2.) My system was current about 4 years ago, but is really starting to show its age in some areas. My TV is the biggest offender with only 1080i resolution and rear projection (I envy those with true flat screens). It possesses average black levels at best and the contrast is fading fast (needs a new bulb). This would be the first thing I would change.

3.) My upgrade would be a tie between speakers and Pre/Pro. I'm finding the Paradigms are becoming a bit too bright for my taste as I get older. On the other hand I would like to use HDMI to process the lossless codecs as opposed to the analog option I'm currently using between the Oppo and P-965. If a gun were put to my head I would go with upgrading the speakers.

4.) I'd rate the importance of my sub and speaker finishes matching a 9 or 10. The subs are placed in the open on either side of the AV stand, positoned inside of the L/R speakers. My wife is very understanding of my hobby, but, like me, wants everything to match.

1) What are your home theater system components, including manufacturers and finishes / colors?

Amp/Receiver: Denon AVR-3805, black
Speakers: Infinity Minuette 5.1 system, black (1997)
Sub(s): Infinity BU-2 12", black
Sources: Denon DVD3910 silver, DirecTV HR21 DVR black, NEC 50MX4 Plasma black (2004), Pioneer DVL-700
AV furniture: IKEA beech finished cabinet
Other:

2) What would you change in your home theater system?

Upgrade speaker system, upgrade to 1080p plasma, BluRay, upgrade receiver to HDMI switching, add whole-house zoned speaker system.

3) What would you upgrade 1st in your home theater system?

Speakers. Definitely. 5.1 Infinity was originally bought to accompany a 55" rear projection TV for a small room (LOL). New house, new room, upgraded to Plasma in 2004. Plasma in '04 was uber-expensive so I kept the Minuettes -- definitely time to move them to a bedroom.

4) When you chose your speaker system, how important was it that the subwoofer finish color matched the rest of your system? Scale: 1–10 (1= Didn’t matter at all, 10 = Had to match finish color). Please explain.

1 - didn't matter at all. At the time there was only black (1997). As I look at upgrades now, I'd put the sub's color matching at a 5 (I could go either way).

Thanks for the opportunity, and good luck to everyone!

1--subwoofer finish match didn't matter to me because it was far enough removed from the system to not need to match. In a different setup it might become much more important to me. However, I think speaker finish match would take priority over concern with subwoofer.
