I set my system up manually, but still picked good. I know enough to know how much I don't know.:D

I consider myself somewhere between good and expert. I can set up a system with ease, but calibration isn't my specialty.

I'm a definate novice. I bought my first receiver less that a year ago, which might be unusual since I'm in my mid forties.
While some folks were dabbling in electronics, I was dedicated to making par from the woods.
But now, with more money than sense, I buy my home theatre electronics and wing it. FORE!

The question at hand is very open ended. How do I rank my knowledge? I like to think knowledgable. Setting up and calibrating the speakers is a relatively easy process but there is much more involved. For example , the subwoofer calibration depends on what the listener likes. Then there is best sub placement and room treatments for overall sound. You could keep it simple or hard. Then there is the video aspect of the a/v. We could go on and on and on. I think it all has to come down to what the 'end' user likes.

The above comments hit the nail on the head...I consider myself an expert in most disciplines of AV set up and calibration...In addition to my own systems I built three systems for friends that were around 60,000 each...And I can set up to what I like without any tools (software) or equipment. What people dont realize that calibration tools deliver results that someone else felt were ideal. They may act as a starting point but rarely are the end game. I remember when I bought my first spectrum analyzer 20 years ago...I thought it was so cool...but ultimately your ears tell you when its right. All A/V sources are not mastered on the same equipment...All people dont have "flat" 20 to 20K hearing capabilities (probably no one has ). I am new to this forum but have been on the AVS forum for a while and it amazes me how people base a lot of there epinions on "non real world" sources such as test discs...Test discs dont reflect the intangebles like "open sound" "impact" "quick and responsive" and great "sound stage" those are emotional responses from the listener when everything is just right...

Long time lurker, first time poster ...

Thanks in large part to reading the forums from this website I was able to do the majority of a home theater installation in my new addition. I did not install the wiring, but did the terminations myself and learned a good deal in the process.

After more reading over at another forum, I also installed and used a BFD and RoomEQ to smooth out my sub's response and add a modest house curve.

I rank myself as a solid "good" to leave the "expert" category for A/V professionals. I'm just a reasonably competent, and quite happy, amateur.

Thanks Audioholic Crew!

I'm probably somewhere in between basic and good. I've run my wires and have gleened all kind of information from websites such as audioholics for system setup. I'm still in the process of putting a 5.1 system together & love reading reviews & user opinions.

A man´s gotta know his limitations

Nice to see some real honesty on the site that not too many consider themselves ëxperts. Kinda refreshing.

I've taught myself all I know about A/V equipment just by reading everything I can find on the subject and by doing all my little fantasy shopping and reading specs. I still consider myself a novice but I can still hook up anything that has inputs and outputs. My education will never end.

Just got my first 5.1 system, & I had some trouble working it all out--lots more cables & connections than my last stereo system (20 years ago!). And I still haven't begun to explore all the options...

I'm a scientist with OCD and I love researching and tinkering with stuff. I can generally figure stuff out, but if i can't I obsessively research it on the net.

I chose good knowledge. I wish I could have chosen expert, but those auto calibrations have come a long way.. or either my hear is simply going away. Either way, I still love to play with these toys. I remember building a radio from a kit made of cardboard, wires, resistors and bunch of other stuff. What a disaster. Thank goodness AV stuff is available. It's sure expensive to enjoy, but worth every penny.

Contest

Still waiting to upgrade my speakers - I've dabbled back and forth between good audio gear and not-so-good audio gear. I wish I had more money!!!

The only thing I can't do at this point is calibrate the colors to 65K.

Audio - I'm a relative expert. This means of course I know more than all my relatives. :D:D:D

I'm pretty new to the serious end of hobby but have been tinkering with A/V stuff for years. Still need to learn the finer points of placement and calibration.

Axiom poll / drawing

Hey Guys,
I responded as basic knowledge in the poll. I am not about to pretend I'm and acoustical expert. I do know what sounds good when I hear it though. I am just soaking up all the information I can. I have been lusting quite a bit over
a couple of the axiom setups, they are just a little out of my $ range so I have been looking on ebay for a setup.

Maybe I'll strike it lucky and have a set ordered by Feb! :D

Setup yes, calibrate ?

Plugging in wires, setting up and general placement no problem. I know what sounds good, video on the other hand is a different story. I am pretty much just using my projector straight out of the box. One day maybe I will get one of the calibration discs and give it a go.

I'm no expert...

...but each year when bonus time comes around at work, seems I get a little bit closer!:D
