basic

I purchased my first good quality 5.1 system 3 mths ago (axiom 60 and 150, svs pb/2 & pioneer receiver). I managed to get everything wired and working properly but haven't worked out the finer details of spl use, calibration, positioning and getting rid of hummm.

I picked basic, I get it hooked up and working. But, I am always tweaking the audio.

I chose expert because I've done a ton of reading, even on room acoustic theory, and have no problem setting up and calibrating a system without an auto-setup feature. However, I think I need more practical experience to truely be considered an expert.

Limited but learning!

I am able to hook most things up but as my colection of A/V equipment grows I need more help to integrate it all.

How smart are you?

I selected basic siince I'm just starting to construct my HT. I suspect I will be much smarter by the time I'm done. Hopefully with the help of Audioholics I can learn from other's esperience instead of trial and error.

My choice reflects the about 30 years I've been involved in the hobby.

I wasn't sure what I was going to answer - either good knowledge or expert, but I went with 'good'. I know audio, but I really get video a lot more. When it comes to audio I think things are a lot more tricky than they are with video and while I can do some measuring and setup on my own, I definitely could learn a lot more about room EQ and fully balancing a system across the board for top notch audio quality.

Yo

No way an expert, but I can set it up from start to finish. Always learning and picking stuff up!

Can set it up just fine. Calibration takes a while. The automatic stuff is straight forward and quick. But who's ever happy with that the first time out???

I said Expert -- though I will certainly use the automatic setup for a first pass, plotting frequency response curves and the like is best done manually, as the automatic setup in most receivers doesn't know what I like. Plus, as a wave optics physicist by schooling, the audio math looks pretty familiar when I have to do it.

Checked 'Good Knowledge', 'cause I'm familiar w/ setting up/connecting everything and can do basic calibration w/ an RS SPL meter and DVE/VE/AVIA.

"B" is for Basic

I have no fear in attempting to set up my system but there are times when I need the help of more experienced leaders. I will exhaust what I know before I seek help. I enjoy figuring things out.

I picked expert. I have been in this hobby for about 4 years now and it always seems like I learn something new about the hobby every day.

it's time for a new speakers

I have no problem set up and control the audio/video gear and not even reading the manual. I do spend time to adjust and calibrate the speakers loundness level, bass and treble to my taste but not as much as some one who just spends days and nights to calibrate the system. BTW I am not an expert system, audio calibration.
I wish I can afford a new pair of front speakers and a nice sub for music.
Wish me luck :)

Ht

I own an Avia and an SPL meter so I can calibrate my HT myself. The auto calibrate function on receivers is usually way off and made for rookies.

Like most people here, I put myself in the "good knowledge" bucket.

I can hook it all up without any issues, I have a basic understanding of what can be adjusted to increase performance. I will admit that I understand video alot better than audio and I'm no expert at calibration, but I love to learn and the tools needed are readily available to help me.

Good Knowledge - ie can set it up from start to finish

I like most everyone else it seems, have picked Good Knowledge - ie can set it up from start to finish

I have been hooking up systems for a long time. Do you remember Quadraphonic Records? My old JVC amp is "four channel ready"
How about Sonics 5 way speakers?

I like to keep up on new systems sometimes you get bite!

Beta VCR, 4 channel turntable

Purchase JVC Downtown Okinawa,Japan 1971

Good Luck to all.

Many years ago, I used to work in a custom a/v install shop, so I'm pretty comfortable with upper mid range components that we dealt with. Would love to play with the higher end toys. Friends ask me to help with their av purchasing decisions, as I'm always reading about the latest and greatest.

I place myself in the good knowledge bracket. I understand what I am doing but I'm always curious to find the root of an explanation which always leads me to asking more questions. I don't find myself getting stumped to often by questions from friends, family or other Audioholics. I'm enthusiastic to learn more about home audio and that enthusiasm has steadily grown so hopefully sometime soon someone will call me an expert.
