I am an expert by no means but I do have a good general knowledge of how to set up an AV/Stereo system.
I voted Good Knowledge in the pole.
I can use a SPL meter to properly set up a 7.1 theater system and use it quite often with my Outlaw Audio 990/2100 combo.
I spend some time experimenting with speaker placement and room treatments.
Set up my entire HT by myself and this included a Panny PT-AE900U w/Severtson screen, ButtKickers, HD-DVD player, lighting system, and several other items.
I always look at upgrading speakers but haven't taken the plunge yet.

Just an overall fun hobby.

To me a lot of the enjoyment of A/V is the tinkering.
I enjoy the setting up and calibration almost as much
as the usage. Of course this can be said of most
"technical" hobbies, such as computers, photography and
A/V. Part of the hobby is the learning aspect.

I picked expert. I may not know exactly what to do with everything but I do know enough make possitive changes.

Hooking up wires is easy, but getting just the right placement and having all the settings on your receiver tweaked just the right way is hard. Not to mention altering it to your room setup.

I picked "Good knowledge".
I guess my ears still have a bit to learn when it comes to setting up completely with out YPAO.

I wavered between Good Knowledge and Expert. I do use the auto set-up but only as the starting point for the full calibration I then perform on my system. I use the SPL meter for all my audio set-up and the Awia and DVDE discs for the audio and video.

I wanted to pick "basic knowledge" but I know I can set it all up :)

I rarely read the manual unless I'm waiting/considering purchasing the unit.
I have an SPL meter and an AVIA disk I have never used :) never even put it in.

I chose Good Knowledge because I can set up my own stuff and I'm usually pinged to help friends and family set their stuff up. Of course your knowledge level is relative to who you are compared against. My problem, like many others, is that I don't know what I don't know. :D

I think a great deal of the fun of audio is the planning and setup (getting there is half the fun) and making modifications to suit your needs/desires. there are however some things that just cannot be done as well on your own and an expert can be required (for example, proper video calibration oftentimes requires a specialist because of the equipment and software access needed).

I chose 'Expert' based on the poll's definition, however I'm far from considering myself an expert. I have some extensive knowledge in some areas, but due to how expansive this hobby can be, it'll be some time before I consider myself any kind of expert... ;) -TD

Good Knowledge-I have learned alot from the different AV/HT forums about equipment and setting equipment up. I buy what works for me(room size, budget, what I need and/or don't need)-it may not be the most expensive-but I buy quality, well respected components.

I voted expert, because I can easily set up my system and it does not have any "auto setup" functionality.

Based on the criteria in the poll, I guess I fall into the expert category. I have been playing with home theater and audio for over 10 years and upgrading all my equipment on average every 2 years. I like the nice auto setup features that receivers provide these days, but I usually pull out my SPL meter and test disc for fine tuning. Also, I am fond of the Digital Video Essentials DVD for color calibration. I am usually setting up theater for friends and family as well. I guess I have kind of even moved into part time consultation as I am working on a paid install for a friend of mine who builds new homes. I love new construction! It's so much easier to put the wires in the walls when the walls aren't there! *grin*

I voted good. After much learning from a friend and various forums I am well on my way to being able to use an SPL meter and already know how to use the Avia calibration disc. I'd say that between my friend and the forums I have learned more than at any store.

Expert, although I'm not as knowledgeable as many. I have set up and calibrated my system multiple times, as I am always buying and selling new components (both audio and video). I love to learn how everything works and how to get the most from my system, I don't completely trust auto calibrations.

I'm comfortable making service mode and internal adjustments (depending on the complexity). I'm usually the one who sets up systems for friends and co-workers.

Based on the definition of expert, Thats what I chose. I wouldnt say im an expert to someone if they asked but i dont have a problem hooking up a system from start to finish and calibrating it. I also notice problems with video and audio that most others seem oblivious to.

Because I work with different equipment and systems on a daily basis I get to have more expeirence with different gear and hookups, Which is always nice. Plus i get to play with some cool toys :D

I can set it all up and can use an Avia Disc and my Radio Shack SPL meter to get everything somewhat calibrated but I am by no means an expert. There's still lots to be learned.
