Strange that the region 2 set is more expensive . . . that doesn't make sense to me. gene, I guess you're not into the B-sides, eh? Otherwise you'd want the box set, but a lot of people are having a VERY tough time getting their hands on it. Hope you're able to easily change items on your order.

I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and impressions on the new hi-res surround mixes. As the head honcho audioholic, I mean. Please tell us you're gonna do a review, gene!

cheers,

Guys;

I just ordered this!

http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=36800&sct=music

I can't wait :)

Ok now I am confused. The Region free one is cheaper! This is the one I really need.

If you still can, you should consider buying a boxset, especially at that price. I think the PAL boxsets are available (Supervij?), but the NTSC is tough to get. The demand is much higher then expected. Last I heard, they were producing more for sale.
Also, I think Acoustic Sounds might of made a mistake on their listing. I believe that all of the albums, whether PAL or NTSC, are region 0.

Mike

EDIT: $157 for the boxset at cduniverse.com, and you get the bonus disc's that you won't get with the 5 disc set (12 instead of 10). Oh, and they list it as region 0.

I think that it's the SACD/NTSC box set that's difficult to find, not the individual SACD/NTSC albums, which is what gene ordered. The PAL boxsets -- they've got so many of them, they're being used as doorstops, paperweights, etc. ;) You may have quite a wait if you want the SACD/NTSC boxset, though, gene.

Being a Genesis Freak, I had to get the box set, cos I wanted those B-sides. And I'm glad I did, cos Nick Davis did a brilliant job on them; they really sound stellar, almost like new songs. (Although no amount of hi-res, remixing or surround sound can save Me and Virgil, but that's just my opinion!)

cheers,
supervij

EDIT: That's a PAL boxset you linked to, Mike. And yeah, the DVDs in all the sets are region 0.

It's really hard to tell what you get with this package.

Are the Bside songs all in multi channel SACD?

I love the song Naminanu and its been so long since I've heard it or played drums to it.

Did you order this box set? If you look carefully it says: Format CD next to the pic so I suspect its all CD's and perhaps 1 SACD and 1 DVD???

gene, the link that you provided won't give you the B-sides. That store has just bundled up the five individual albums, so you'll get the m/c SACD for each album, as well as the NTSC or PAL DVD for each album.

The only way you'll get the B-sides (which ARE remixed in m/c SACD and DTS) is to order the box set.

For the link that Mike provided, it does say "CD" next to Format, but I suspect it's because they don't have an icon for "SACD". Looking at CDUniverse's SACD of Dark Side of the Moon, it also has the icon for "CD". But they mention SACD prominently on the Genesis box set link. So it'll have the SACDs and PAL DVDs for each album and the B-sides, and no CDs.

They really have made all this confusing, what with different formats in different box sets and such. Hope we've helped a bit.

cheers,
supervij

EDIT: AcousticSounds does have the SACD/NTSC boxset for $170 US. Here's the link: http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=38643&sct=music

Yes, I know. I figured since Gene was ordering the 5 album bundle, that he could see that he could of ordered the box instead, and got the extra stuff.
From what I can tell, he ordered the PAL version anyway... so there you go.

Thanks guys. I feel bad cancelling the order since the company has been so nice to me and appears to have excellent service. Hopefully if Darly puts me in touch with Phil and the band, they can send me some extra discs.

I finished my interview with Daryl but waiting for him to fact check it before I post it. Stay tuned...

My Genesis SACD's showed up today! (era 1976-82)

My initial impression is that they are all way over EQ'ed making them sound too bright in the top end. The worst example of this is Trick of the Tail.

I understand the source material is limited, but IMO there is no excuse for this. The music is also a bit overcompressed but its to be expected.

It boggles the mind how these discs don't even come close in fidelity to the Beatles LOVE DVD-A disc considering the Beatles music is much older.

All in all, I like the mixes though some of them are a bit overdone in the surround channels.

So far I think Wind & Wuthering is the best sounding disc of the pack. I will take a look at the DVD portions soon and followup with some formal reviews shortly.

dobyblue, you got taxed from Canada Customs? That's strange, I didn't get taxed at all.
I've imported stuff quite a bit, usually SACDs from Amazon.co.uk or its marketplace sellers.

Most of the time I don't pay duty, but every now and again they nab one.

It doesn't deter me though. :)

Is your impression about them sounding over EQ'd while listening in 5.1?

I have that similiar impression of the redbook layer, but don't feel the same about the 5.1 layer.

Yes, Trick of the Tail in 5.1 is almost unlisteneable. If it weren't for the musicial content, I'd likely shut it off.

I haven't listened to the Redbook layer of these discs. Perhaps I will compare them to the normal CD's I have of these albums to see if its a different master.

If you feel the DSD 5.1 is too high on the top end then stay away from the DTS 24/96 versions.

Unfortunately, I totally agree with Gene on that ... :(

$250 US?!?!? What the hell? I paid $150 CDN for the first box set! How do they justify a hundred dollar increase?! Phew, I guess I'll be doing some comparison shopping in the upcoming months!

I know they haven't quite got their details correct yet, and not sure if this is for the actual 'box' set.. but 5 SACD's + DVD's would be correct for the next box 83-97.

I think the self titled genesis album is going to finally shine. The others always have sounded fairly good, so don't know what to expect with them.

Yeah I haven't seen a good deal yet, but HMV.co.jp do not have it listed yet and that's where we got the deal from last time.
It's not coming out till Septmember, but I seem to recall that deal on HMV Japan was pretty limited, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled and I'm sure one of us will alert the other when they've got it down to $150.
