CD Compression Depression Music Industry Idiocracy

The only reason I would do that is recording quality, and I never buy CDs just for that. (Any interest I might otherwise have had in classical was beaten out of me by my high school orchestra experiences, much as my English classes eliminated my interest in Shakespear.:() Those wishing to hear...

    Torn!

Unfortunately, it has turned out that there are a tiny handful of CDs in my collection for which the Omni's bass response is not sufficient, after all. (These include Shriekback-Glory Bumps, Ozric Tentacles-The Floor is Too Far, and William Orbit-Strange Cargoes.) Not wishing to break up the Def...

    Widescreen displays

It seems to me that I have seen TVs like that, in a magazine.

    Best audio format

What is ridiculous is the idea that a better-sounding master of a given recording should exist in a different format. The standard should be to start with the best-sounding master possible, and release that in all formats!

Are HD players really worth it?

I always laugh at threads titled "Movie X looks/sounds great on Blu Ray!" They could leave off the "...on Blu Ray" part and still have a true statement. It is all about the mastering.

    My 1000th post milestone.

Congratulations!:D I wonder what the record is, and who holds it?

Paradigm vs. Definitive Technologies vs. Polk

I would be happy with 1/4 that much.

The much higher resolution of CDs is a simple fact. What I own or don't own is irrelevant.

I am saying that in many cases the material has never been performed live (in the case of mostly electronic music, it cannot be, except by a program that amounts to a recording in its own right) and thus that there is nothing with which the recording can be compared.

Exactly. (I really don't understand why mastering would be done differently for different media anyhow, beyond those differences required for purely technical reasons.)

    Watched Spidey3

I also objected to all the emotional histrionics, but they didn't ruin it for me. I enjoyed it, and will watch the next one.

    Bookshelf with tweeter control?

At 18" X12"X10" with a 10" woofer, they are not exactly small. They refer to them as "economical" but don't specify the price. Some manufacturers think that $1000/pr is "economical".

    Torn!

As much as I enjoy the sound of the BP10Bs, there is a critic inside me who kept saying "big speakers, big sound, big deal (yawn)." This part of my brain is much more impressed by small speakers with sound belying their size, which is what the Mirages deliver in spades. As a result, those are...

Wow, what a steaming load of BS!

    Best audio format

Absolutely!:D Seriously, though, such alleged "nuances" are strictly imaginary. CDs have much higher resolution than LPs (hence the disclaimer about CDs revealing limitations of the master tape that LPs mask.)

    Best audio format

99% of the music I listen to has no "original sound" to get close to. It was created in a studio for playback at home. In a very real sense, the CD is the original "event".
