Klipsch La Scala with Adcom, harsh highs

Well put.:D Seriously, though. When you have to modify speakers (or use equalization) to make them sound decent, you need different speakers.

That "warmth" is a form of distortion.

    Realistic Break-in

Just listen to your music. They will either break in or not (personally, I think not.)

How much of a downgrade is this going to be?

Agreed. Not a downgrade at all.

New Genesis concert dvd out - excellent

I will check it out. I hope that there is a lot of emphasis on their classic material, which I like vastly better than the newer stuff. (I have always wanted a concert performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in its entirety.)

want great sound, but don't have a lot of $

My system consists of a Cambridge Audio 340C CD player, 340A integrated amp, and Alesis Monitor One speakers. I absolutely love it, and there is a real chance it is the last I will ever buy (which is saying a lot coming from a guy who has changed systems as often as I have.) Total cost was just...

    Bose

Excellent point. The insignias have MDF cabinets, real binding posts, and carbon fiber cones. The Bose have plastic cabinets, spring clips, and untreated paper cones. Aside from a bit of harshness in the treble, the Insignias also sound halfway decent, which cannot be said of Bose.

    Bose

Fine, here is something more specific: My brother had a pair of 301s, for which he paid $350. When I gave him a pair of Athena B1s to replace them with ($120), the sound was so much better that his wife even commented on it!;) Another example: In high school, a friend with rich parents was...

Klipsch La Scala with Adcom, harsh highs

If learning from my mistake helps others avoid the same mistake (by not buying Klipsch), then it is very useful.

Klipsch La Scala with Adcom, harsh highs

When I made the mistake of trying Klipsch speakers, turning the treble control all the way down did not tame the brightness.

Bookshelf <$350 Shipped for Computer Use

If small size is as much a priority as fantastic sound, and since you will have a sub, pick up a pair of Cambridge Audio S30s. These are regular $260/pr, but often on sale as low as $220. (check Wild West Audio.) They are only 9" X 9" X 6".

Klipsch La Scala with Adcom, harsh highs

It has nothing to do with the Adcom. Klipsch speakers are inherently bright and harsh. That is why I will never own any again and would never recommend them.

Anybody going to see Zappa plays Zappa this year.

I saw Frank Zappa twice. Incredible shows. Hard to see how this could compare.

I agree. That is the one and only advantage of vinyl.

    Speakers don't matter

I have heard systems costing well over 100X as much as mine that did not sound better (equally good, but not better.)

    Going to a Concert?

I used to see every big name musician or band that was touring (eg Springsteen, ELO, Fleetwood Mac, Rush, Jethro Tull, etc.) for $8-$12 per show. Now it costs $75-$100 if not more. It just isn't worth it.

    Speakers don't matter

Mine are -3dB at 45Hz. That is pretty good.

    Speakers don't matter

I have learned from direct experience that a pair of studio monitors in a nearfield configuration can sound as good as any speaker system, regardless of price. Listening to the awesome remaster of Pyramid last night on my Alesis Monitor Ones, I was virtually sitting next to Alan Parsons at the...
