Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

Very well put. People like me who live in apartments, and therefore keep the volume low out of necessity, gain no audible benefit from having more than 20 watts or so per channel. For me, a more powerful amp would be a complete waste of money. (In fact, I currently have the least powerful...

    Too much bass?

I suppose that could end up happening in my case. I just hope I can reach a final decision before my 30 days are up. (The last thing I need is another set of paid-for speakers sitting in storage!) I may even break out my tiny Cambridge S30s again, to see how much I miss bass below 55Hz. (I...

    Too much bass?

 I did not say this! I said that the mids and highs from the JBLs sound very similar to the mids and highs from my Alesis monitors, with the only substantial differences being in the bass. While I am still within the return period, I will try the monitors again to see if I still...

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

I made no generalizations. I described a specific case. Besides, you missed the real point, which is that I went to a much lower wattage with no loss of performance whatsoever.

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

Not true. The Carver was old, and had an audible hiss. The Onkyo has zero background noise.

    Rocky Horror DVD

Some chickens**t gave me an anonymous neg in this thread. I don't know who you are, but you know who you are, so I am here to tell you to shove it!

    "The Economy" doesn't really exist

A good way to summarize it is: "The rich get richer. The poor get poorer. Those of us in the middle get screwed." Of course, that has never changed.

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

I had the same speakers before and after making that change. (Obviously. how else would I know how the two amps compare?) I play my system as loud as I can get away with in my apartment, and I always have.

    Too much bass?

I don't have to decide immediately, since there are a couple of weeks left on the return period (I bought them locally.) Part of me does lean towards going back to the monitors, though. I am not hearing a lot of difference in mids and highs (I do think the monitors throw a bigger soundstage...

When someone adds to a reputation with a "thank you", their name is listed. When someone detracts from a reputation with an "anti-thank you", they remain anonymous. Why is that? Shouldn't we be able to PM someone after they have dissed us to call them an @$$hole?

    Too much bass?

As much as I love my Alesis Monitors, I decided to try a pair of JBL Stadiums when I found them at a deep discount. It was the dual 8" woofers that seduced me, but now I am starting to think it is too much bass! With certain material, the bass just seems to overwhelm everything else...

Very well put, and entirely correct.

So Obama shows he is nothing new......

Now that I can agree with!:p

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

When I went from a 150 watt Carver integrated to a 20 watt Onkyo "shelf system" reciever, there was almost no change in the sound at all. What little there was was actually an improvement resulting from the Onkyo having a somewhat lower noise floor.

Cambridge Audio Azur 640c vs 740c

You are not even going to hear a difference between the 740C and the 340C, much less the 640C.

So Obama shows he is nothing new......

True. More specifically it is those people who elected (and, even worse, re-elected) Baby Bush.

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

Separates only make sense when you need tons of power. This will be the case if you like it really loud, your room is huge, or you are using very inefficient speakers (eg electrostatics.) In all other cases, there will be no audible benefit to not using a reciever instead.

Guitar Amp Drivers for replacements?? (noob)

Different drivers have different characteristics. Replacing the woofers is likely to yield bad sound because the crossovers and cabinet volume will be wrong. Refoaming is a better idea. Search "speaker refoaming kit" on ebay.

Looking for a nice pair of speakers (<$400)

For just $200/pr, Alesis Monitor Ones are outstanding. In fact, they hold their own against a lot of vastly more expensive offerings. I also got a pair of JBL Stadiums for $300, but that was a deep discount (MSRP is $600.) They sound great with most music, and exceptional with live rock (in...
