Cambridge Soundworks - sold out to Creative?

Sorry to hear that. RIP, Henry. (And only 73.):(

Best 5 speaker setup $800 or less will buy?

You could get 3 pairs of Alesis Monitor Ones for $600. That would leave you with an extra speaker, but no doubt you could no doubt find a use for it. The Monitor One is a lot of speaker for the money, and that would be a truly fantastic-sounding system!

    Great in-celing speakers?

I agree 100%. Being above your head is a major handicap, since tweeters at ear level is ideal. Being flush with the ceiling instead of surrounded by air also limits the possibilities for imaging. Finally, an enclosure designed to fit in a ceiling cannot compare to a freestanding cabinet for...

Obama says we should learn to speak spanish.. HUH?

While English is in no way "inherently" superior, it has been the language of the US since Colonial times. Every wave of immigrants has learned English, regardless of where they came from or what their native language was, until now! Why should there suddenly be an exception to this just for...

Anyone purchase the Vinyl remaster of "Joshua Tree"?

The CD remaster is excellent, and quite noticeably better than the original release.

    Looking for some new stuff...

A few real standouts, off the top of my head (and in no particular order): Steve Tibbetts: A Man About a Horse The Trey Gunn Band: The Joy of Molybedenum Andreas Vollenweider: Book of Roses The Legendary Pink Dots: The Maria Dimension Matmos: The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of the Beast...

    Great in-celing speakers?

Do you not have the space for freestanding speakers? They would give you much better sound (especially imaging.)

Most music goes down to what frequency?

I have heard minimonitors that go to 55Hz with and without a sub. The overall sound with a sub is more powerful, but I am not aware of hearing any actual notes that I could not hear without it.

    boston acoustics

The VR series were quite good. The new Horizon series totally suck, however. Pretty hard to even believe the same company makes both!

    Where did the caveman go?

Why would they? Certainly noone on this forum has my address or phone, nor do I have theirs. That seems like how it should be, after all, the forum is anonymous.

Cambridge Soundworks - sold out to Creative?

The original Cambridge Soundworks speakers were designed by Henry Kloss. He probably has nothing to do with the new ones.

I just found this great link that explains the different sonic signature of speakers

My favorite sound is not even on the dial. It is precise and smooth at the same time (which they show as polar opposites.) My Cambridge Audio speakers have that sound. Not too sure who else does (maybe Mordaunt Short, since they are in the same "family".)

    coat hangars as speakers cables...

No way! You made that up!:D

    coat hangars as speakers cables...

Neither. It means that there is no such thing as "great wires" or "crappy wires" because wire is wire and it makes no difference. Of course, we already knew that. The only real objection to using coathangers is that they are stiff.

    Annoyed By The Absolute Sound

I have been annoyed by TAS (and most audio magazines) for years. The worst part is that they advertise insanely expensive cables as though they could make a difference!

Receiver or Separates for my speaker choices

It was a CM-1090. It had the SH, but it was very noisy in operation. I gave it away months ago.

    Too much bass?

I hooked up my Cambridge Audio S30s again last night. I was immediately reminded of why I loved them the first time around. I stopped noticing the "missing" bass after a few minutes, and they are just simply better speakers than the JBLs in all other respects (especially imaging.) At this...

    Too much bass?

I have two pairs in my HT. They sound awesome for that, but not so great in my separate stereo system.

    Too much bass?

My room is only 12' wide. 3' from each sidewall would place them only 6' apart (minus the width of the speakers themselves.) This is less separation than the manufacturer recommends, less than the distance from each speaker to the listening position, and would place them very much in the way to...

    Anonymous negative comments

Here are the so-called "explanations" I got: In a thread where I recommended some good speakers in the OPs price range: "Terrible". In a thread where I mentioned seeing an old movie in college: "College, LOL." In a thread where I expressed a negative opinion about speakers I dislike...
