Matt, great job on the sub, and the output looks fantastic.

Your wife in very accepting to have a monster like that in your house.... I personally couldn't live with one, but I'm glad you could get it going, and it looks like it blows away that little baby sub you just kicked to the curb... :)

Go for a simple finish, not so busy.... that stuff just stands out like a soar thumb. A nice cherry like on the last sub would be awesome IMO...

Thanks, I wish I could use REW and really show the output, it's intense to say the least.

I'm probably not going to get it veneered until after the new year, just not enough time and I want it done right. I'm determined it comes out looking good, just can't afford something this big to look like ***.:D

So I got the house to myself this afternoon and was able to really stretch this things legs during Transformers 2. The first battle scene is a great demo and the sub handled it incredibly well with effortless extension down in the teens. This is truly the most powerful subwoofer system I've had to date. The best thing about it is I didn't have to buy a 2000-4000 watt amp to get this kind of output.

That's because you are working with the laws of physics instead of trying to fight them.

I really am liking that Dave, but don't know how to specify that type of pattern. All the ones I've looked at are like this:

Maybe I need to talk to Mr. Salk.;)
That's book-matched. If you were to get close enough to them, you'd see a line through the light area. Because of that, you don't need 36"x36" sheets. You can buy narrower sheets and use a mirror to find the best place to cut them, as long as the sheets are consecutive. This should also cut the cost considerably.

really nice project!!

it's kind of hard to tell from the videos, but i think the black finish came out looking quite nice. is it just black paint?

kappa perfect 12vq

How well would the 12vq work with this design?

The enclosure would have to be modified to even fit it but I don't even know if the Kappa would be an ideal sub for any folded horn design.

Update

I went to Home Depot today and got a hand cart to move this monster back out into the garage to get the finish on it. I pulled a lot of the screws out and filled all the holes with wood putty. Was also able to spray the mouth and the bottom of the sub with some black semi-gloss spray paint. Tomorrow I'll get to sanding and hopefully have it done with a couple coats of Duratex speaker paint.

I just discovered your thread this morning. Nice job on the build Matt and I’m glad you are painting rather than trying the veneer. That can be a tricky process and after all, the sub is what it is (i.e. not a piece of furniture).

Horn subs are pretty cool, no?

Yeah, veneer would have cost me about $500 and that would have been just for some cheap paper-backed cherry. I got two coats of the Duratex on today and have enough for a third coat. I'll get that on tomorrow and then let in cure for a couple days before bringing in back into the house.

I really do love it and don't see it being replaced any time soon.;)

Not meaning to hijack thread, but why can't I start a new thread? I can post reply but not start a new one. I could before can anyone help?
Not sure? Trying logging off and clearing your cookies?

Edit: Not sure why you're "Awaiting Conformation" either? I'll let Clint know, he can take care of you.

Well, I went and checked on the sub out in the garage after giving the duratex a couple days to cure fully and noticed it's flaking on the seams where I didn't get all the PL adhesive off. That stuff is impossible to sand but I though a couple coats of spray paint under the duratex would help, guess not. Don't know what I'm going to do about this problem. The rest of the enclosure looks good with two coats, it's just a couple seams that are flaking.

What kind of spray paint did you use under the primer?

Edit: I mean under the Duratex.

What's amazing about how efficient this subwoofer is that Matt was powering it with a meager 125w @ 8 ohm BPA-1 Emotiva amp and his house was shaking in places he didn't know it could shake. Can't imagine the useful output that could be achieved with 5 times that power or more.
