You can save a lot of money by buying BIN in gallons and using a spray gun. Watch out for the fumes- the ethanol/methanol blend can be toxic and explosive. It dries really fast, too and can be sanded smooth soon after it dries.

What's amazing about how efficient this subwoofer is that Matt was powering it with a meager 125w @ 8 ohm BPA-1 Emotiva amp and his house was shaking in places he didn't know it could shake. Can't imagine the useful output that could be achieved with 5 times that power or more.
Well, the driver used is not exactly going to deal with 5x more power. The benefit of huge horn systems is the base efficiency. Imagine putting a 15" TC AXIS or LMS driver in that horn cabinet and driving 3000-4000 watts to it? OMG. You could cause true critical structural damage to the house; maybe the neighbor's house! :)

Seriously? Using the same design? How would one go about designing a horn cabinet for a high end driver? If I'm gonna spend the resources buying a nice driver, amp, and DCX; considering that space is no issue, why wouldn't I build "said horn"? I'm in.

Where did you say this was available?
Any paint store or department. They have oil based, water based and alcohol based. The Water based has a blue and white can, the oil based is gold and white and the alcohol based is red and white- tehy have all of these because it's often used for repainting after fire or water damage and you never want to use paint with a base that's similar to the stain. This means that a water stain that has completely dried should be painted with oil based, an oil based stain should be painted with the alcohol based primer and water based primer can be used on fresh walls or any time it won't dissolve something under it. If teh wrong primer is used, the stain will bleed through because it has been dissolved and the primer can't act as a barrier. I don't think any of them are more than $20/gallon.

If you need a compressor and spray gun anyway (we all do, it's just that not all of us have done anything about it), Harbor freight has the best prices, especially when they're on sale. They sell a gravity fed HVLP conversion gun for about $15 (best price) and that's what I used to shoot my kitchen cabinets with satin Minwax polyurethane. The bigger the compressor, the less water will get to the gun but any time spraying a finish with a compressor is an option, good filtering is an absolute must. I sprayed primer on all of my trim when I replaced it, too. In spring, I'll re-paint the silver on my truck with it, too.

I don't believe you. You'll have to do this and shoot a video. I want to see it happen.:D

Ever heard that saying about people from Missouri?

Just registered here. One thing I noticed in your build is that you used 3/4" plywood (well technically is usually 23/32"). I thought Bill's plans called for 1/2" plywood.

I would like to know what the performance of this design would be scaled down and using a really good 10 or 12 inch driver just to get the cabinet smaller. It would seem like you could still get amazing performance above what you could get in typical 10 on 12 inch sub design. Has anyone done this?

I'm interested as well.

Cool, thanks Matt. Wow those are still freaking huge though. There is just no way I would have room for something like that in my room now.

I will just have to stick with my Titanic builds. I am flat to 20hz now anyway and that aint to shabby.:D

Yeah they are huge, which is probably why folded horns never became really popular in a home theater enviroment. However, if you ever get a chance to audition one you'll understand why some can tolerate the size.;)

Yeah, I know. My Friend's Father owned a pair of Klipsch Corner Horns and they were nothing short of unreal. They were not even cracking the 20hz barrier either. There is something the way the bass is so uncolored it is hard to forget that sound. One day, when we buy a house where I can build a no compromise room I will do it.

Alright Matt, it's all your fault.

I've been thinking about starting one of these projects for my house. Between your sub and what I've been seeing about the JTR Growler, I need the bass. :D

Besides, I met a cabinet maker though my wife that this stuff would be an easy project. Could even get veneers out of him. Now I just need to figure out what I can fit in my theater.
