4K - 8K Resolution and/or Dolby Atmos/DTSX Content Reviews

I just saw about 15 minutes of a DIGITAL copy of the 10th Anniversary of Interstellar 4K HDR DV which a friend gave me via MKV file (using Kodi).

We all know how Nolan hates Atmos, so his movies are only in 4K DTS-HDMA.

So anyway I’m watching this new digital version of Interstellar (English Language), and I heard OVERHEARD sound effects. At first I thought DSU Upmixing was on. So I went to look at my Yamaha’s LCD and lo and behold it reads “DOLBY ATMOS”!!!!!!

The first and one and only Christopher Nolan movie that has Dolby Atmos.

So this digital copy is a little over 100GB in size. It must be Asian or European version. Definitely not USA version.

I was reading last night that some studios have been making 8k scans of of their movies. WB has scanned at least 20 of their movies so far. They aren't telling anybody which ones, but they are preparing some for possible future release. They said they are looking at doing this more for movie theaters rather than home release. I know 8k TV's have been out now for a few years, but it doesn't seem to be taking off. Then look at theater chains. Most don't even have 4k projectors yet. So many theaters still rock 2k projectors. My theater in my city only has 2k projectors. I know AMC is trying to upgrade their projectors across the country to true 4k. I'm sure once that's all said and done, they'll raise ticket prices again.

Yeah, that version was upconverted by someone. I was just checking online and the 10th Anniversary edition does NOT come with Dolby Atmos. Standard Nolan 5.1 mix. Definitely coming from overseas.

Probably sounds like upmixing w/DSU or Neural:X. But still pretty cool to see that “Dolby Atmos” light up the LCD.

I still don’t think Nolan’s movies sound as good/balanced as the other great soundtracks out there.

Not many theaters are 8k right now either. Most screens are now digital, but only about 1 screen per good quality theater is 8K, normally the Dolby Cinema ones in our area.

8k TVs are still a ways out, cost being the main factor, since adoption isn't there.

They have been scanning some movies to 8K even several years ago. But the problem is that they still make digital master 4K, which doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re going to scan or remaster at 8K, why not make the digital master also 8K?

I am watching “Con Air 1997” in 4K Atmos Streaming. And the Video Quality looks like “5-Star” to me. So when it hopefully comes to 4K UHD Disc, I bet it will get the highest 5-Star Video rating as well. It looks awesome.

Tombstone 4k Disc

PQ: Excellent! This new 4k transfer is the best this movie has ever looked. Some shots looked very grainy, but besides those, very clean. I had my doubts on this release since Disney did it, but I have to applaud them for this. Really great 4k transfer.

SQ: Same 5.1 lossless mix from the blu ray. Not a bad soundtrack at all. Though, with most 4k transfers, I would have loved for them to put a new Atmos track on the disc.

Overall: 10/10 movie! Tombstone is one of the best westerns ever made. It has star power, a great western story based off of real characters and settings. The performances from everybody are top notch. Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday steals the scene every time he's in it. The cinematography and score are also very good. Can't forget about those!

Do yourself a favor and go purchase this new 4k upgrade immediately. You will not be disappointed!

Tombstone 1993 4K looks pretty good. Not as good as Se7en 1995 4K or Con Air 1997 4K, though.

But Tombstone 4K looks a lot better than previous Tombstone versions.

Since Con Air isn't officially out on 4k disc yet, I can't compare it. The streaming version won't be as good as the disc or K-scape version. I am looking forward to the 4k disc once it's released.

Se7en was a great transfer, but I would put Tombstone right up there with it for overall 4k transfer. It looks 10x better than it did from the blu ray. Same with Se7en, the 4k looks 10x better than it's blu ray. The closeup shots in Tombstone were very detailed. The HDR coloring was great. I would like to see it in Dolby Vision. It was almost like watching it again for the first time. That's how much better it looked. That was same feeling I got with Se7en.

I watched the blu-ray copy of it not that long ago so it's not time for a proper re-watch of the UHD yet. I only had a brief skip around in Tombstone to take a look so far and that matches my impression. Anything closer-up had very nice clarity and detail. Shots at more distance did look more soft and blu-ray like, but the HDR gives those shots a lot more punch too. My expectation when I do get around to properly viewing it all is that it won't be the greatest UHD (typical of older films) but still a worthwhile upgrade if it's a favorite.

I'm curious what criteria they used to determine five stars and not for that list. I haven't seen the UHD version of all of them, but quite a few. Not all of them are films that I recall being particularly stellar or stand-out on UHD. Some, yes, for sure. Others didn't seem to gain a whole lot - perhaps that just means the quality was more subtle though.

Interstellar for example is a movie that is a fine film and there's no argument that the UHD is the definitive version to see. But I've watched it a few times and I do not recall it being particularly impressive on the HDR/4k aspect. Solid and serviceable for sure, but not what jumped out at me as "demo" material on the picture front.

Event Horizon is another one. Nice to see in 4k, and there were certainly some nice improved visuals in some scenes, but again not what I would have considered reference material as that five-star rating would imply.

Yeah they must be comparing them to other movies of similar age and camera (1990’s vs 1990’s, analog vs analog).

There’s no way a great video from 2025 shot on 8K digital IMAX camera is going to be matched by other older movies shot on analog films.

My guess would be that they are putting a premium on film grain structure and some cases where the HDR is more natural and less overt than in some newer films. Things like that. I suppose I can understand that criteria and it has it's place but I do generally favor the amazing clarity and colors of a modern high-res digital master, as you suggest.

That being said, I've seen some pretty great old film transfers and many of them coming off the 35mm negatives are better than the 90s-early-2000s 2k masters being upsampled. It's worth recognizing those even if they can't match the sheer clarity of a modern 8k camera.

I peeked at the UHD of The Green Mile after seeing it on the list. I was actually surprised at how it looked. A lot more pop on it than you expect from an older film like that. Defintely going to have to give a proper watch at some point.

On the other hand, I watched Sneakers in 4k last night. Despite a full 95Mbit data stream, it really wasn't a great 4k movie. Definitely better than a bluray without upsampling, but a MadVR updampled 1080p version of that film is fairly close. The HDR is of course another matter and a nice addition but it's a huge showcase film for it either. Still a great film though. No matter what version you watch

Absolutely agree that the older 35mm camera negative getting the 4k treatment, looks way better than the later 90's early 2000's 2k upscaled 4k releases. Personally, I don't mind film grain. It gives the movie that cinematic feeling. I'm not saying all of them, but a good majority of movies shot in 6-8k just don't have that same feeling. If the graphics used in the movie aren't top tier, they look horrible and it ruins the movie. Now with 50%+ of movies being shot with green screens, that super high clarity exposes that. I can easily tell when a green screen is used and sometimes it takes me out of the whole experience.

I have not watched the Sneakers 4k yet. It's on my list. I just got Anora on 4k. I'm going to try and watch that this weekend. I need to see what all the hype is about. There were 8 other 4k releases this week. My watch list is 10 miles long at this point This week I got The Outlaw of Josey Wales, Pale Rider, Dirty Harry, Stripes, Gandhi, The Good German, The Informant and Timecop. So many movies, so little time.....

Is there anything new on the 50th? I have the "original" 4k steelbook.

I see Universal is re-releasing Jurassic Park 4k. Jurassic Park 1-3 in one steelbook and 4-6 in the other steelbook. All of them now have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The previous versions just had HDR10 but the sound was still DTS:X. So not sure how Dolby Atmos is going to significantly improve over DTS:X.

I don't mind some film grain either. The noise can tie together an image nicely sometimes. I sometimes think that film grain gets overly emphasized sometimes by the more oldschool enthusiasts. Almost every review or critique on a movie's picture quality brings seems to bring it up as a major point. There are some films that are de-grained and the complaining about it is somewhat incessant in certain circles. The semi-recent Cameron 4k releases were an example of that and, for the most part, I found them to look fine. I brought it up in the context of wondering if it was an element given more priority in that 5-star list, given that the list contained a lot of older films.

Sounds like there's just a new documentary. I presume the film and sound are the same as the previous release, because nothing mentioned other updates.
