Some say it does nothing when playing back Atmos tracks. Yamaha says otherwise in their manuals. I'll leave it to others to contact them as I'm kinda' over it myself.

I’ll wait and see too. But I would be interested to hear an answer since afaik it doesn’t work like that. More Yamaha confusion!

The new Yamaha receivers only have Dsu, Auro-3D and neural x now, that document is dated.

“DSU” is an abbreviation for Dolby Surround upmixer. The page included in the above post is from the manual of the Yamaha RX-V6A which includes dated DTS Neo:6 and added Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization in a firmware update.

Below is a page from the Yamaha RX-A8A manual. It is very much the same, save for the lack of dated DTS Neo:6. Notice the inability to apply DTS Neural:X to Dolby Digital Plus tracks. My Onkyo can apply DTS Neural:X and Virtual:X to DD+ all day long.

While I cannot apply any other processing to Atmos tracks other than “Straight” decoding and also cannot apply Center Spread in the Onkyo, my Yamaha can apply DTS Neo:6 to Atmos tracks and also allows Dolby Center Spread.

Licensing deals enhance as well as impair features in different products from different manufacturers. Dolby has a nice menu but most of what they serve up is ‘a la carte.

Adding Auro 3D in an update was nice, but we all know what feature most waited impatiently for in the Yamahas. I’m curious if any who are liking Auro 3D will actually reconfigure their speaker arrangements. They may as well do it correctly. Pay me no mind, I use virtual height speakers.

Well, they kinda' answered it. Atmos is object based, not channel based but hey, they aren't the first outfit to lower the bar in customer service. "All Channel source?" Do tell. Atmos tracks on disc are Dolby TrueHD 7.1 based with metadata. Streamed Atmos is Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 based with metadata. Different speaker configurations will make a receiver adjust its Atmos processing. Denon and Onkyo AVRs simply will not let you apply the up mixer to an Atmos track. Yamaha allows it to be selected. They can avoid confusion by saying it actually does something or remove the option to apply it altogether in a firmware update.

My hope was that on my Yamaha that I could just leave DSU on full time and not need to select straight each time a source happens to be Atmos or DTSX. However my crazy mind seems to not be satisfied with the answer of “it should not do anything”. But what if it does? LOL

Yamaha and gene both said that leaving it in Dsu won't change the atmos track. So that's 2 sources

No, it won’t, really. It is a redundancy if one has it set to Auto and then hits DSU while playing back an Atmos track. Or, so they say. They just need to clean it up. Interesting that they recommend Dolby Surround when network streaming is Dolby content. What flavor of Dolby? Come on Yamaha! You can really appreciate a Denon manual after looking at a Yamaha manual. If everything on page 141 of the Yamaha RX-A8A is to be believed and is accurate, I'd be more than a little pissed off if I shelled out good money for it with those cross up mixing limitations. You have a DVD-Audio player and want to hear a DTS 96/24 disc on your new 7.1.4 setup while applying the DTS Neural:X up mixer? Too bad, you should have bought something else. You wanna' use Dolby Surround on a DTS track? Nope. You wanna' apply DTS Neural:X to a Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD track. That's a big No. Those are some really restrictive processing features for something costing that much. But, hey, they did add Auro 3D, so there's that. I need to get back to my music and switch to a different track on the DTS 96/24 disc I am currently playing using the DTS Neural/Virtual:X up mixer. It sounds good on this disc . If new firmware updates change any of those restrictions, I'm sure many would like to know about them. Who wants those kinds of limits on their gear for that kind of money?

You have to really nail both Yamaha's support feet down as I find their responses very vague, circular and open to interpretation. Their technical support sucks and their manuals suck even more. Yamaha's response was absolutely horrid.

I don't see it as a big deal if Neural cant be used on Dolby Atmos or DSU on DTS:X. It just makes sense because Dolby was never able to decode DTS and visa versa.

No receiver, that I know of, allows cross up mixing of Atmos and DTS:X tracks. But, locking out Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus up mixing by DTS:Neural:X and locking out Dolby Surround up mixing for ALL forms of DTS is just bulls#%t.

I think I agree lol. Meaning that Atmos and
dts-X can’t be upmixed at all and don’t need to be. I’m talking about dts and DD which can be cross upmixed, . I will double check tomorrow, but I’m certain I can upmix DD, and DD+ with DTSnx, and upmix dtshdma with DSU.
FWIW I didn’t do the firmware update that came out around the time Dolby had their panties in a wad as I was trying to avoid being locked out. I’ll check tomorrow…..Maybe I’m dumm!

I think it’s really a sign of the times. CS is an afterthought anymore. Really sad. Yamahas is horrible, but at least they respond! Kind of…
