Does the Yamaha a8a have center spread for Dolby. I heard they got rid of it but Gene and other AH members complained and brought it back.

I haven't seen a setting for it on my unit though

What is Auro 3D? Looks like the A6A and A8A are the only two Aventage AVR's that will have it once the update is available.

There are no movie contents with Auro3D in the USA.

There are very few music contents with Auro3D.

So it basically becomes another Surround Upmixer like DTS NeuralX and DSU. :D

If I had it, I would give it a try. Doesn’t hurt to try.

But based on what I’ve read, it might be in between NeuralX and DSU in terms of how aggressive it is. NeuralX is aggressive and DSU is less aggressive. So for some people, in between is just right. Some people say they get more out of one format vs another. Of course, that’s subjective. :D

It should have it buried in the menu like the previous generation of Yamahas. Do you have the online PDF manual from the Yamaha website?

I think it has been mentioned by Gene as something that has sadly been removed.
One of my daughter is doing a “party” with her classmates and I can hear them having a blast listening to Pink Floyd. They are 15-16 and are able to appreciate the music and the sound: guys there’s hope !!!
Edit: I think I earned the “cool dad title”

I haven’t looked at the A8A manual, but they had it on 3080 and 5200.

On my 2060, you go to menu then dsp and toggle up to Dolby Surround and click it. There you can turn center spread on and off

Possible they removed it. I haven’t seen Gene’s review yet, but he would know

@Trebdp83 might know if center spread is still an option on the 2021 Yamahas.

I think it’s related to Dolby that removed this feature. Not specific to Yamaha.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/gqzfhk
It’s a feature I used in 5.1 for 2.0 music upmixing but in 5.1.4 upmixing, the front heights to a lot of the work and center spread became unnecessary for me in upmixing 2.0 sources or 5.1 sources to 5.1.4. My heights are on the front and back walls. So my setup and preference may not match others, esp folks using in ceiling speakers.

On my Marantz in in Setup>Audio>surround parameters>center spread on/off

It IS from 2017 though. Supposedly if I did the firmware update, it removed that feature as well as cross upmixing. I did not do the update and have all features. My understanding was that Dolby brought back center spread to new AVR’s, and subsequent firmware updates after the ones that removed said features, were overwritten to include them. I could be wrong about that though. I did try googletron but nothing was made clear. Next I might RTFM.
I know this is thread about Yamahas. Just commenting on center spread in the big picture.

My Yamahas are from 2017. Unless Dolby or DTS come up with something better than “virtual height”, not sure I need a 2022 AVR. Maybe I’ll feel different in a couple years though. :)

Did I hear somebody call my name? Sorry, had the music turned up. Fleetwood Mac’s “Seven Wonders” sounds great in Dolby Surround with Center Spread on. I am loving this 2021 Onkyo! :p

Nice!!! I was enjoying Elton john in Atmos. I do like center spread with DSU from 2.0 sources though!

Back in the late 60s and early 70s I had friends who kept insisting that I listen to their new Pink Floyd LP. Never cared for the group at that time. By the time that 'Dark Side of the Moon' came out in '74 they'd stopped playing Floyd at me.

Dark Side of the Moon seemed to become a standard test record which hifi reviewers used to test systems (along with Also sprach Zarathustra). It was also acclaimed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

I came across a YouTube vid the other day which was comparing the first 30 seconds of the track 'Money' on original LP, remastered LP, fancy cassette version, hi-res download, standard CD and third generation master tape. Of course they all sounded much the same via YouTube. :D

Anyway, as I'd never heard the album I decided to listen to it. And I can confirm that playing the 96kHz/24bit from Amazon Music direct to the Yamaha (A2080 actually) it does sound better quality than the versions on YouTube. It still sounds like pretentious boring Pink Floyd usual stuff to me though.

So maybe it's just my personal taste? Or are all the listeners high on LSD? Hmmm.

Much better than rap though.

Oh these kids also like rap ;)
They are all musicians, in a specific music secondary school. They are listening as well to Pink Floyd, Massive Attack, Gorillaz than to some "modern" rap. They all play multiple instruments (one of my daughter is playing piano, clarinet, bass, electric bass, guitar, ukulele...)
Here is a small video of my elder and her friends a few years ago...
I made these video for my parents that still live in France. Some people have stolen these video, they have made millions views in Brazil if I remember well...
