Pretty Sure I Just Broke My Arm

Seriously, I have no life.
Okay, here's the thing with that. I have experienced the exact same thing a few times now when I got hurt.

The sore jaw, isn't too bad. I didn't hit my face that hard, my cheek and jaw have very small scuffs, almost not even noticeable. The arm is definitely the most hurt right now. There was no loss of consciousness, just that sick light headed feeling you get with a painful injury right when it happened, so I really don't think I have a concussion. Headache is gone and was pretty mild at that. No nausea.

I remember one time I hit my knee on a cement pole and the same thing happened, almost blacked out from the pain. Happened another time when I took a nasty shot to the jimmies once too... I was practicing casting a round fishing net with lead weights attached all the way around the edge and swung it wrong. Those weights whipped around and nailed my boys dead on. I got light headed and had to lay down, almost blacked out. That one really sucked, lol. Also happened when I broke my foot pretty badly too. That sick, light headedness and almost blacked out then too.

Yesterday was exactly the same. I was fully cognitive and never actually hit my head or lost consciousness. Just that sick, light headed feeling I'd experienced before with painful injuries.

God, I'm a wuss... lol.
If you DIDN'T feel like you were about to pass out after being hit in the 'nads, I would have serious questions unless you had been wearing a cup and for some activities, I highly recommend that. Full contact fishing?

I grow my own. Have for years. I got some heavy indica right now. Some fat, sticky buds too. I haven't been to a dispensary in a long time.
Maybe 'cough' was the correct word as in, "you gotta cough to get off".

When you fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH) you can fracture all the way from your wrist to your clavicle (collar bone). Since the wrist is critical for many functions it is the worst place to fracture. The shaft of the radius often needs a plate and screws put in to fix the alignment. I've seen hundreds of radial head fractures and can't think of one that went to the OR. Clavicle fractures usually heal fine but sometimes need a plate. Fractures of the upper arm (humerus) vary but take a lot of force. None are good but some heal n their own.

In short, don't let the wrist bear all the force. Let your arm crumple and distribute the force over your whole arm, shoulder and side if you can. Of course putting the hand out is a reflex and we are generally surprised when we fall so that's tough to do.
That was me 18 months ago. Slipped and fell, caught myself with my right hand - the dominant one, of course . I thought (hoped) it was just a sprain at first. My first reaction was "I'll just walk this off for a bit". But, as the pain intensified and the swelling increased, I admitted to myself that it was probably broken. So, off to a local health centre we went - x-rays confirmed it - I had a compression fracture of the radius right behind the wrist. Doc injected a local anesthetic, set it and casted it up. He then said he needed to send a post-casting x-ray to Orthopedics at the main hospital downtown to see if they were happy with it. They weren't. I had to go downtown, have the cast cut off (under conscious sedation) and the Orthopedic specialist re-set and cast it. That was a long day.

For the first few days after casting, the most uncomfortable part was the swelling. It felt like my arm was going to explode, so I borrowed a cooling blanket machine which provided some relief.

Six weeks later, the cast was removed. The radius is now a bit shorter than it was, leaving my hand at a slight inward angle. After a few weeks of physio, I regained most of my range of motion. And, while I've regained sufficient strength in my arm for normal activities, I still have some restriction. Ironically, I feel no pain or discomfort in my radius, but I do on the ulna side of my wrist. I can pull with it, as in rowing, without a problem. But should I try to throw or curl a dumbbell, that is really uncomfortable.

I've discussed it with an Orthopedic surgeon. He told me we could try to fix it, but it would involve bone grafting, with no guarantee of improvement. Since, I can maintain normal activities - change a tire, shovel snow, do woodwork, etc. - we agreed that surgery was not called for. He said that we could revisit it if I found that the restrictions became a major hinderance. Well, 18 months after breaking it, I'm not ready to go under the knife yet. The discomfort in my wrist is (very) gradually lessening. I may do a pull-up again someday...

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread, @Pogre. But, it is on topic. :D

Yeah, already thought about that. I never get hurt doing something manly... lol.

Well, 'cept for the time I rolled my quad down a hill and it ended up on top of me, upside down. I broke 2 ribs and likely was concussed. I was full on knocked unconscious that time. Had my helmet on tho!

And you know what? This is why I hate urgent care. I had 2 broken ribs, one was fully separated and I could feel the ends rub together when I moved wrong. Plus the concussion. They acted like was none of it was big deal. No concern that I'd been knocked unconscious or follow up questions. Didn't even give me time off work, and I was a butcher! It's heavy work! I ended up burning vacation time, took 1 week off and went back to work with broken ribs. No pain meds either for probably the most painful injury I've ever had. The Dr (yes, it was an actual Dr) had a shitty attitude and acted like I was an asshole for even asking about time off work...

F*ck those guys. I never went back to that location ever again.
Remember- EVERYONE has a supervisor. That Dr who couldn't be bothered to do their job should have been reported. I would probably have something like "Hey, Hipocrates, can I get some meds?".

Problem with narcotics is that there is great deal of pressure on physicians to NOT prescribe them. In the case of fractures, the local orthopedists have requested ED physicians to prescribe only a few Percocet or Vicodin (around 12 total) along with instructions to take ibuprofen and tylenol unless absolutely cannot take the pain without the narcotic. In my state, the state pharmacy board sends out a report every other month or so that shows how many narcotic Rx you have written and then compares it with how many have been written by colleagues in similar practices. It always seems to deflate the alleged numbers prescribed by the others by a ridiculous amount. So in this case it is not uncaring physicians, but rather the pressure is to get rid of narcotic prescriptions since there is such a huge problem with narcotic addiction and OD. As usual, there are so many that abuse a privilege (or drug in this case) that those who truly need them suffer.

What if it's one more sub with dual drivers?
(Shhh! Don’t let on, but I’m trying to get him to replace his Hsus with two more of those. Imagine how happy he would be! ;) But don’t tell, k?)

Picked up the x rays yesterday. They gave me a disc and it took a while for me to find these images.
Yep, those look like bones.

Eagerly awaiting responses from people that actually know things about this stuff.
