Paradigm 100v4 with receiver, or amp and receiver?

Hey all,

just spent the last hour reading through threads and didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I have paradigm 100v4 towers with a def tech center, surround towers, and a Martin Logan sub. I’m currently running a denon avr-1912. When I listened to the paradigms in store they sounded so much better than mine at home. I have no experience with using an amp and a receiver. Those of you who have these speakers or have knowledge in this area would be of great help. One guy at a local shop recommended an Anthem receiver with no amp. Some threads folks said hands down get an amp and a receiver for the best sound. I’d rather just get one high end receiver and call it a day, but if you all say buying an amp really helps the speakers blow your socks off, I’m in.

I do like the Idea of using an External Amp for the 100's. But Placement and Room Acoustics are more important IMO. Have you played with Set-Up and Placement?

You do need to find a Matching Center Channel

Not too much. I really need to research all the settings and options to keep it on. I’m a bit overwhelmed with all the different choices and not knowing which one is best. The room is fairly small, so there isn’t much room to move them around. Right now they sit to the left and right of the tv. I’d love to know if I’m getting all I can get out of my current receiver. But either way, a receiver that pushes more watts out can only sound better, right?

Also you said to find a matching center channel. Does that make that big of a difference? I figured a high quality center would work well with other high quality speakers.

Absolutely makes a Difference. Your Front 3 should be the same.

Looks like I’ll be in search for a paradigm center tomorrow! Haha. I’m assuming it doesn’t have to be the same model? But the same brand? Only reason I ask is I feel it will be hard to find the matching center as these aren’t that new.

What is the exact complaint on the Paradigms?

If you can describe what is lacking, it will make it easier to get the proper recommendation on how to fix it.

According to my local home theater store specialist that has new pradigms on display and to listen to said that the older ones I have are better speakers than what he has in store. Except when I listen at his store and listen at home, his sound better. He said his are connected to a anthem receiver and that if I replace my Denon with a anthem mine will sounds better. So I started doing some research on here and found some people recommend a whole separate amp for the speakers and then still having a high quality receiver.
I’m wanting to hear what other people who have had paradigms recommend. I don’t fully understand what makes a receiver make the speakers sound good other than proper watts.

Please do what HD suggested first and we'll take a look. You can't compare the perceived sound quality with that you remember when auditioning in the store/dealer because of so many other factors such as room acoustics, media source, players used, listening level etc. Even if the conditions were the same, though that wouldn't be possible, you still cannot compare because of humans very poor auditory memory in such scenario, expectation bias and Placebo effects.

If the V4's impedance and phase angle characteristics are similar to that of the V3, then it could be considered a demanding load but again, you need to figure it out first using the linked calculator.

Regardless, the talks of using an Anthem AVR with no amp is pure baseless speculation. Also, if the calculator indicated you need more power, you do have to replace your AVR with one that has pre-outs.

I need to research pre-outs so I understand what that helps with. I’m in multiple car forums so I understand the frustration behind new members and obvious questions so I appreciate the advice and patience. I’m coming from a soundbar so this is all a lot of lingo and information that I’m taking in.

Might try tapatalk for phone convenience.....generally I just resize my pics on my pc before trying to upload.

Thanks for the advice! Never heard of tapatalk but it works.

I know it’s a mess right now but I’m in the process of organizing and moving stuff around so the basement is way out of sorts.

I did some searching on Facebook marketplace to locate a pradigm center to match it with the speakers and then get rid of my def tech. I found a cc-570 v3. It’s not the v4 like my towers but I figure it would work better as it’s the same brand.

You need to spread those Tower out. I see a Door to the Left. I can't see what to the Right of the TV. But you need to change things up in there
