I cannot see a single fault with the Pioneer TAD speakers. I like that they're a Japanese company (not Chinese, etc.). On-axis response seems to be roughly +/-1.5dB. Off-axis looks good. TAD has an ok dealer network in the United States.

Any other votes for, or against TAD? I'm thinking about replacing either Sonus Faber, or B&W.
B&w are very popular. Everyone knows B&W. They are world class. Their build quality (800 Diamond series) are world class.

But nobody knows Goldmund. We don't have an off-axis response. We don't even have a real credible on-axis. They are not even city class or town class.:D

The whole point of this thread was to see what else I can add/replace on the list, from everyone's help. So that we can make the ultimate manufacturer's list :)
LOL Here, riiight! wishful thinking at best!

Instead of going by AH votes, who are the top 10 if we go by sales volume? Bose, or B&W?

Yeah, but I think we like 3rd party measurements to confirm in order to be world class?

Like world class publications from Stereophile, Soundstage, Home Theater Magazine, etc.
hey ADG, i've seen you mention this a couple times. you are a pretty level headed guy it seems, and i usually like reading your responses. i know you're talking about measurements here, and stereophile does do a good job of measuring speakers. but doesn't it bother you that they also talk about "chocolatey midranges" and how a speaker really came alive when we changed to bigbux speaker cables? i enjoy reading reviews just for entertainment, but as for them being a credible source of info, well i just don't see that.

Yeah, I don't put much stock into most reviews, including Stereophile, Soundstage, HTM, S&V, etc.

The measurements are fun to look at.

But as most of us agree, these measurements are only "snapshots" and do not tell us the whole story.

In the end, we have to audition and use our best judgments. And they have to sound great to us in our own room even after a while.

Yeah, Bose, B&W, DefTech, all the Harman speakers combined, Klipsch, KEF, & Paradigm would be my guess for the top market shares.:D

Of that list... most of the people I know, really only know Bose or maybe HK lower end stuff like htib speakers....although to my surpise my brother did buy some KEF albeit the slim line T105s...I believe. They cost him a good chunk of change and he coulda done much better....oh well.
BTW...from your list...like em or not...Polks are in the top 5...IMO.

Oh, yeah, forgot about Polk.

How can they resist a big tower for only $150/pr on sale?

We are going to have to decide how a speaker should be judged; is the best speaker the one that costs the most or the one that sells the most? We must have the definitive answer by the end of this thread.

I have the feeling you may be right about Polk if we go for sales. I have a few of their products myself.

That's true. When I got upgradeitis last year I got suckered in by the Monitor towers when I should have been looking at higher quality small speakers.

That said, I do credit Polk sales with getting me into the game in the first place. I bought the old R30s when they went on sale for $40 each many years back. I had no receiver, no other speakers, and a cheap tube TV at the time. "Well I have these nice speakers, I better get a receiver...... now that I have that I need a center and some surrounds...... seems silly to have all this nice audio gear without a big plasma TV.........."

I got some good laughs. Harman makes the best commercial speakers I've heard. They have the most innovative driver in recent years in the Infinity MRS. they do in rectangular room testing. They did a lot of research on maximizing performance via placement. They also have much more reasonable prices than Goldmund.

That being said does a balcony operation qualify. It's not a garage and I'm certainly well established. After all I got over 8k posts here to your less than 50.

Bose innovated by introducing the cheap cube you can sell with great marketing. They discovered if you cut out the highs and lows and stuff a small speaker with full range drivers you can sell them for a killing.
