here goes the stupid questions ... but still need smart answers.

1) what happens when one end of a speaker wire is attached to the positive and negative binding posts of a receiver or amp (while it is sending a signal) and you touch the other end (both positive and negative)?

2) what happens when both ends of the speaker wire are attached to the same receiver/amp but different channels?

Chances are nothing... But if its a high power amp that is turned up quite high you might feel a slight tingle to a definant shock. I felt quite a jolt once while standing barefoot on wet ground attaching a speaker wire on a rather large PA system that was in use outdoors so its output was way up.

2) what happens when both ends of the speaker wire are attached to the same receiver/amp but different channels?

IF the amp can handle it, you would create a difference channel. Place it in the rear of the listening room and you have a poor mans surround sound system.

You become the speaker, but since your FR is pathetic, you will definitely not be satisfied with the sound.

but I did not relate the 2nd STUPID question properly ...
if this speaker wire is attached to say FRONT LEFT binding post ... then you grabbed its other end and attached it to FRONT RIGHT ... what happens?

the speaker is playing whats sent. the receiver doesn't know where you put the speaker. even YPAO won't fix that.

Mike, these are some pretty basic questions. All you have to do is follow the wire.

but there is no speaker in the mix. its the reeeiver - speaker wire - back to the receiver. and these are theoretical questions, i doubt i'd be dumb enough to do this.

If your never going to do this, and its seems HIGHLY unlikely it will ever happen, why ask?

Obviously, nothing good can come from this. You might even break the amp.

Your body is a rather high resistance through the skin. You may feel that 30V tingling, like a 9V batter on your tongue But not much should happen with the receiver with such a high resistor in the terminals no matter how you connect it.

You're luck to still be around...

With the right grounding, and your description is almost perfect, you would be absolutely amazed at how little current is required in order to be fatal. The voltage isn't as significant as the amperage. It takes only a small portion of a single Amp to kill.

and also how long the contact is ...

did i mention i got electrocuted from a wall outlet TWICE? different exposure times. a second or two ... your arm goes numb. a little longer ... it messes with your heart and lungs

I broke open a really old film camera, and while looking at the parts, I accidentally touched the leads of a charged flash capacitor. Pretty big shock. Also, I think if you connected one channel to the other, it would just heat up quite a bit, and if there's no protection circuit, it would overheat/maybe catch on fire. I also guess it depends if you have it positive to positive or positive to negative.
