Reference Sub

I am looking for a reference sub for audio production and trying to get something accurate. I am currently looking at the Perlisten R212s but it is a bit pricey and my room is only 12 x 15. If I need to spend $5500 for an accurate sub, so be it, but just wanted to send this out to the wider audience.

If you don't intend to cross them over very high (above a 100hz) then you have a lot of options. When you say reference, what is that to you as many would expect it to mean different things?

By that standard, you should be more worried about what the room acoustics will do to the low frequencies rather than the subwoofers themselves.

That's part of my question about how high you will be crossing over to your mains. As Shady mentioned your room will play the biggest part with low frequencies and our ears don't have much of an issue with distortion in low and ultra low bass.

You will be better off with dual subs than one, especially at your price range, as that will help with your room acoustics.

So your research into accuracy led you to Perlisten’s push/pull designed subs. You are asking if there is something cheaper that does the same thing or better—correct? That is a question for @shadyJ and your own comfort with spending.

The others are trying to help you with what you want your bass in your room to accomplish. Honestly, subs just seem to produce bass—the resulting nuances of how they quantitatively sound seem to be colored by first your room modes and second how loud you want to listen.

I gave up trying to understand those deferential nuances and instead just went with @shadyJ ’s comparative reviews and comments.

Your room dimensions dictate the optimal placement for the subwoofer and having two will allow will you to smooth out the response. Is box size an issue for your household? Are you looking for maximum SPL and extension? What are your mains and what is the setup for, surround or stereo?
