Yep that's exactly why I am trying to steer him to some better brands and higher fedility speakers.

At this point I would say high output is a priority. That was one of the other reason for the subs was he would get high output across the freq band.
For subs, I would consider the type of music. For classic rock, towers that go down to 40Hz can do the job. For techno and movies that can have deep synthesized bass, subs will cover the lower band down to 20Hz. The mid bass slam from rock is often above the subwoofer frequency but some bands will add synthesized bass to give you those deep rumbles where subs are needed. Nice thing with subs is that they can always be added later if needed.

His listening tastes are just about everything besides classical.

To my mind classical uses subs the least (with some organs perhaps as a contrast). I like my subs to cover at least strong response at 20hz (no less than a -3dB spec). Preferably multiples to eliminate modes Placing subs with speakers only, meh

Cerwin Vegas look loud but not what I would call high fedility. :)

Is your friend looking to play music at very high volume? That should be factored in. Philharmonic makes great speakers but for higher dynamics I would lean towards the HT Towers over the BMR Tower, plus the HT Towers have a matching center (but production is limited and there can be wait times).

You should also take that into account for the receiver. At least the X3800 or X4800 or consider adding external amps. For higher dynamics I would be looking at RBH and Arendal. Maybe consider JBL HDI-3800. Also a horn loaded speaker like the CV but better sounding. KEF R11 on the higher end but sometimes you can find an R11 in the used market for a good price. Can always add a KEF center later. Of course, if he likes your Ultra Towers then that's a relatively safe bet.

Is there a shop where he can demo different brands?
The center pretty much will blend with all of them with their AMT tweeter. When I first asked Dennis about that years ago when considering the BMRs, he said it will blend seamlessly. Now that I own them, it definitely does. That likely means it will also blend with their new, slightly lower cost towers, the Cantabile.
