I have never carried proof of citizenship. I'm white and male so unlikely to be bothered by the gestapo, tho.

I would think there is proof but perhaps hard to locate. Naturalized citizens would have the paper at NARA ( National Archives and Records Administration ).
I am pretty sure birth records are someplace as by now not many over 100 and even then, reporting a birth was required well before 1926.
Initial registration to vote needed something. But then, I have a convincing face.
