The US has a balanced budget Amendment, but the Legislative and Executive branches haven't bothered to adhere to it.
There isn't any balanced budget Amendment to the US Constitution so of course the Legislative and Executive branches don't to adhere to it. ;)

For all of Trump's bluster and BS, he's trying to reduce the debt and as he said, it's gonna be painful, but it needs to be done.
Trump is very keen on huge tax cuts that will increase the national deficit. And how do you think that is paid for? By borrowing, that is, increasing the debt.

So don't renew the individual tax cuts from 2017 that are about to expire and "unpermanent" the permanent tax cuts for corporations as well. As you wrote: "it's gonna be painful, but it needs to be done."

Here's a link from Treasure explaining a little about deficits and the financing:

Notice the deficit for 2020. $3.13T. Wonder who was in charge. Oh, there was a huge tax cut in what, 2017/8?

Hmmmm, I wonder what else happened in 2020 ? but I get your point, regardless we have been heading down this rabbit hole for sometime and the bonehead that followed Trump added his fair share of deficit as well.........

GO DOGE! Let's clean up our gov't spending in All Departments Let's rid the Dept of Education! What other departments are worthless to us people? I like the way Trump is challenging the needs. Get everyone in a tizzy and get the job done. O, I'm still an Independent voter.

Right now, the Democrats are the thing of the past and see if they change their way "FOR THE PEOPLE." They need some real damage control repair. lol Sometimes, I just have to laugh.

Must be a closet voter thing. I'm clearly MAGA, or a conservative Republican. My posts over and over show I am. Yet somehow no I'm an independent.

Another J6 convict (pardoned by Trump) is in the news after being arrested for an outstanding criminal charge:

>>>Houston man pardoned by Trump arrested on child sex charge

Andrew Taake received a six-year sentence for assaulting officers on Jan. 6. He was arrested Thursday on an outstanding charge of soliciting a minor. . . .

Federal prosecutors said Taake used bear spray and a metal whip to assault officers, and that he was caught after bragging about the incident to a woman he met on an online dating app. . . . In June, he was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty in 2023, but was released from federal prison in Colorado following Trump’s sweeping Jan. 20 pardon of those charged for partaking in the melee. . . .

Trump has referred to Jan. 6 defendants as “patriots” and “hostages,” . . .<<<

Yet another J6 convict pardoned by Trump managed to get himself jailed on unrelated charges.

>>>A gas mask-wearing Jan 6 insurrectionist is already heading back to prison for two unrelated firearm convictions just weeks after being issued a presidential pardon. . . . U.S. District Court Judge Dabney Friedrich – who was appointed by Trump – rejected Wilson’s claim that the pardon covered his separate convictions in Kentucky for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of an unregistered firearm.<<<(emphasis added)

One can seriously suggest that the US Government get its fiscal house in order. But, what appears to be happening is a slash and burn campaign without regard for the consequences. Being in office for a few days isn't sufficient to determine where the fat is.

You're right- I was thinking about the states, which do- lots of arguing about my home state of Wisconsin's budget and taxes in recent years and.

Here's the reason no Federal amendment exists- "Congress usually does not pass one. Several proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution would require a balanced budget. Most of these proposed amendments allow a supermajority to waive the requirement of a balanced budget in times of war, national emergency, or recession.".

It's forcing people to examine Federal spending and it's about damned time, for that to happen. Everyone is there for handouts and they don't give a rat's butt about the fact that they're often in a fringe group that wants to feel special- look into the amount of fraud in government programs, too.

From the link, "Estimated annual (Medicare & Medicaid) fraud tops $100 billion, but investigators say it’s likely much higher."

I already said that examining government spending is a legitimate endeavour. AGAIN, determining where and how waste, fraud and inefficiency are occurring takes more than a few days.

Federal amendments of any kind is next to impossible to pass in USA today, which is why you should talk less about term limits for members of Congress (which requires an Amendment) and instead about other practical solutions. Abolishing Gerrymandering, for instance, or various types of ranked choice. You can even have more than one House representative for a district and thus more evenly represent the population.

Someone is always looking into wasteful spending- why do you insist that it started when Trump entered office? The problem is that, even though waste is identified, nothing is done about it. The inflation clock has been available for at least twenty years.

And if examining government waste spending DID start with Trump, wouldn't that be to his credit, rather than something to bitch about?

I know, I know, it's not what he's doing, it's HOW he's doing it.

What I'm saying is that there is no rhyme or reason to what DOGE is doing. If you think Musk and his band of flying monkeys somehow conducted an audit of government expenditures and found all the fat and fraud prior to Trump assuming office, and then were able to surgically slice that stuff out immediately....well, I don't know what to say to that.
