Krugman has a number of comments about the new Trump tariffs in several articles, but in the one below he also talks about the legality of them:

>>>... Also, although I’m not sure such things matter anymore, what’s the legal basis for these tariffs? U.S. trade law gives the president huge discretion to impose tariffs, but only for a specific set of reasons: economic injury from import surges (Section 201), national security (Section 232), unfair foreign competition (Section 301), dumping — sales below costs. Drug smuggling, especially imaginary drug smuggling, isn’t on the list.

The president can impose tariffs much more broadly if he declares a national economic emergency. But has he done that? Does 2.6 percent inflation and 4.1 percent unemployment sound like an economic emergency to you? And even if Trump gets around to declaring an economic emergency, what does fentanyl have to do with it?

As far as I can tell, there’s a real possibility that Trump’s new tariffs will face a court challenge, and that he will lose. I’m not an expert on trade law, but I do know a bit, and this looks flatly illegal to me.

But even if these tariffs are blocked, or Trump finds some way to declare victory and call them off, the damage will be immense. ... <<<

One Canadian, Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, wants to hit back hard against Trump tariffs and target red US states.

>>>Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, plans to rain economic punishment on Americans if President Donald Trump targets Canada in a trade war.

Ford has threatened to cut power transmission to U.S. homes and businesses and banish U.S. liquor from Ontario shelves. Wearing a MAGA-like hat reading “Canada Is Not For Sale,” Ford has pledged to target red states with dollar-for-dollar retaliation. In an interview Wednesday, he described himself matter-of-factly as a brawler with a reflex for combat. ...<<<

Republicans from agricultural states are of course worried as well of being targetted.

>>>...But for [Senate Majority Leader John] Thune and other ag-state Republicans, targeting Canada and Mexico is magnitudes more sensitive. Even Johnson, while vowing that there would be “no daylight” between Congress and Trump over his tariff threats over immigration, predicted that Trump won’t levy tariffs across “whole countries or whole industries.”

Thune has hinted at his own personal discomfort, telling reporters in the Capitol recently that he’s “not a big fan of, you know, across-the-board, universal, uniform tariffs, because in some cases, you know, the impact it has on the ag economy, which is critical to our state.”
...
Several GOP lawmakers are even already privately drafting legislation to help Trump formally enact levies against Canada and Mexico, which could put additional pressure on Thune — even if the bills are just MAGA-aligned messaging tactics.

Farm-state Republicans, meanwhile, have been quietly bracing for weeks now for Trump to follow through on his trade threats on Canada and Mexico in the coming days — and potentially make some new ones.

“This is just the beginning,” one Hill Republican said.<<<

His position is to look at payments and verify if they are legitimate, he was ordered to authorize all payments without oversight. Rumor is Trump was about to announce one and a half trillion dollars missing from the treasury but them planes started falling out of the sky (unrelated). I don’t know if that’s true but it would line up with the video of an official discussing throwing gold bars off the titanic.

Ooooh, didn't say that you don't support Trump any more? As if any thinking being would believe you.

Here you don't give any link to source, nor will I ask it for you, but since you are what you are, you didn't notice the watermark in your post from an extreme MAGA supporter: TheStormRedux.

No wonder you refuse to give your sources.
