No thoughts and prayers today?

Out of curiosity are you referring to nations way less populated than ours? As you can clearly see in this country, people are alot less moral than they used to be. Theres many factors that have helped push the
moral downturn that you see today among so many people. At the end of the day this country needs more prayer not leftwing insults towards people of faith. Do you think shutting off the legal guns from criminals
would stop them from pursuing illegal guns?
I don't see people being less moral than they used to be. When was that? In the age of slavery? Ethnic cleansing of Native Americans? The age of Segregation? The use of child labor? Women as second-class citizens? Communist witch hunts? Was it when the USA was destabilizing foreign democracies? When was the golden era of american morality?

Well I wouldn't call them godly men would you?
Godly men are responsible for many horrors, too, Christians are a bloody lot. We don't need more prayer, we need to tax churches and increase education (and keep the damn religions out of the government and school).

Seriously, I have no life.
Ive read an there are plans on the internet how to make a gun with a 3d printer .
That has been out there for a long time. The gun wouldn't be able to fire many rounds unless it has some metal, though.

Maybe the US didn't have a golden age of morality, but we also didn't have mass murders, car chases resulting in death on a daily basis and other crimes that are now rampant.

Many people have lost respect for life & other people and the fear of punishment. The desire for street cred makes them want to go to prison, so they can be seen as 'important'. WTF?

Yet somehow other countries don't have these issues. These guns should not be manufactured, that's how you solve that. Anyone caught building or selling them gets life in prison.
Somehow the UK can control this stuff and not have mass shootings on a weekly basis.
Life in prison would be too harsh- if the person can't be connected to a mass murder, make it hurt, but we have an Amendment that deals with cruel & unusual punishment. I do agree that skirting a low of this type should hurt. A lot.

More people have died in the name of god than for any other reason.
One of the reasons I don't associate with any religion but it was because of the number of people who killed in the name of god.

You mean like the morals of white evangelical Christians that enthusiastically and overwhelmingly supports Trump, and continue to do so? They are surely much less moral than they used to, or perhaps we are just now seeing what they always been?

The guy who paid a porn star for bare back sex just a few weeks after his kid was born to his 3rd wife all of whom he cheated on. There is no religious right, they are frauds.

It’s hard to say if the ills are due to our only-recently industrialized lives... not likely though, as has been noted it our most ignominious achievement to have been the first society to know mass murder and serial killers. It is far more likely the result of American life during and after WWII, the Cold War, and the subsequent conflicts both within and without our borders.
BS complaints about violence on television, Hollywood, video games... are frankly a symptom of a much deeper angst. Religion is no salve either, not considering the violence perpetrated against other... nonbelievers.
Much more likely is the stress caused by living under constant fear of complete annihilation by nuclear or chemical weaponry.
Let’s face it, this is not uniquely American any longer. It also didn’t begin in other industrialized areas the way we know it.
I guess jazz isn’t the only original art form America has given the world.

I'm not "scared". And IMO it would be exceedingly difficult to get 99%. Let's explore an analogy. Cocaine and heroin are egregiously illegal. If you're caught selling or using these drugs it's a felony and you end up in prison, yet there's something like one million people per year trying cocaine. The US has been fighting a long term "war on drugs" to the tune of $50B/year, and 45% of felony convictions are for drug offenses. And for all of that heroin and cocaine use is not in decline. And I think it is obvious that the number of people who feel they must own guns is greater than the number of people who want to use heroin and cocaine. So while I'm with TLSGuy in spirit, I'm not hopeful for a positive outcome. It just isn't realistic in the US, IMO.
Such a hard question and solutions aren't' simple. Particularly in the short run. I'm pro registering, licensing, insuring, and mandatory training for gun ownership. My analogy is cars. No one thinks the government is trying to take your car away because of these restrictions. Furthermore, you're only allowed to drive what your licence say you can. You need a cdl license to drive a truck for example. I don't know anyone who thinks we should get rid of needing a DL, insurance, and driving schools because there are people who drive without a license and negligently, or purposely, kill someone while doing so. To me, it's like getting rid of red lights and stop signs because someone will always run one and harm or kill someone. That just makes no sense. We need to start somewhere.

I used the vehicle operation analogy myself when this discussion came up before, and so I couldn't agree more.

Studs generally don't have to pay for it.
Sure they do! Herpes, Clap, Gonorrhea, HPV, HIV, divorce, child support, 1/2 their net worth if they are that studly... oh... and if they are religious hacks that somehow think they are above the word of their god... I guess there’s always this place they insist I’m going since I’m a non-repentant heathen! :p

There probably are people who would be considered 'religious Right', but they don't make the news the way televangelists do.

This thread reminds me of a discussion between two people.

Emotional Pseudo-intellectual says: "Turn in your guns to help prevent gun violence."

Other Guy says: "Cut off you penis to help prevent rape."

Emotional Pseudo-intellectual says: "But, I'm not going to rape anyone."

Other Guy says: "Exactly."
I hear the exact same conversation in reverse...

Middle of the road guy says: "We really should look at enacting more laws which target common sense gun reform."

Crazy gun nut says: "Why are you trying to take all the guns away?"

Middle of the road guy says: "I didn't say take guns away, I said we should look at common sense gun laws."

Crazy gun nut says: "YOU ARE TRYING TO TAKE MY GUNS AWAY!!!!!!!"

Yes, I hear this ALL the time. I do also hear ridiculous discussions of taking guns away from some.

The hard part is really kicking to the curb both the Emotional Pseudo-intellectual as well as the crazy gun nuts. Neither side cares about addressing the issues in a manner which has been proven effective in other nations.

Just got a notice from the venue for our annual Subaru charity event that will be held in Sept. In light of recent events, they are bringing in metal detectors and a significant security presence. We are a family, charity event but with the frequent recent incidents they aren't taking any chances.

It must be awful to live in these conditions where one feel this is necessary.

Misinformation does not help with gun control either. An AR-15 is not a military grade weapon, putting a ban on military grade guns or assault rifles WILL NOT ban the sales of AR-15s.
I’ve been meaning to follow up on this...
The AR-15, designed by ArmaLite, (hence the designation AR for ArmaLite Rifle) WAS A MILITARY WEAPON. The company had troubles, sold it to Colt.
The M-16 was designed from the AR-15.
I have personally held in my hands the parts required to turn a Civilian, Single-Fire AR-15 into a Select-Fire(full-auto, 3-round burst, single fire) weapon. Gun Shows are a marvelous thing!
The history of the AR-15 and any modern marketed derivative, or of any AK derivatives (AK: Avtomat Kalishnikov or Automatic Kalishnikov Rifle) is for MILITARY USAGE.

NOT SPORTS.

Does requiring a “key” to change cartridges really change the intended design and history of this firearm? Does limiting magazine size?
A skilled rifleman would require less than 5-seconds to change a cartridge prior to the introduction of the key... required for legal “sale” in CA.
Guess what, I talked to a guy who told me he could convert any “keyed” AR to the “Unkeyed Version.” I don’t own one, laughed, changed the subject, wished him well, and walked away.

I have fond memories, as I said, of target shooting with an old Colt AR-15. It was nice, controlled recoil, easy to aim, easy to fire. Illegal for me to own in CA, and so my Dad sold it. Illegal to own because someone used such a rifle to kill school children in 1989. That was an AK. Also now considered a Sports Rifle.
That event was the deadliest non-collegiate school shooting until Columbine. It was perpetrated by a... wait for it...

...white supremacist who targeted mostly SE Asians, killing 5, injuring 32.
