There are theoretical advantages to active speakers (internally or externally powered).
But theories and reality are not always the same. I have owned the 100% fully active Linkwitz Orion 3.2.1, which required 8 Channels of external ATI Amps and external EQ/DSP. Some critics proclaimed it was among the best in the world. I subjectively think it did NOT sound ANY BETTER than other passive speakers, including RBH, Revel, B&W, KEF, etc.
So - it's cool whatever people want - passive-active, internal-external-power.
The fact is that it is simpler for most people to just replace the external amp vs having to ALTER the built-in sub-amp to bypass the built-in amp.
But it's cool whatever people want.
