Must-own, but not well-known

Has anyone seen the recent Swedish (I think) film Let The Right One In?

It comes out on DVD/BD on the 10th and I have heard it is very good...

I think Almost Famous should be in any collection.
Good movie. Not sure if I would call it not well known though. I am still waiting for this to get a US release on BD. It is currently available in the UK.

Maybe we should loosen the "not well known" aspect of the thread to "non-mainstream" movies?

OK - here's four obtuse comedies that I have loved for years - they should give you a clue to my warped sense of humor ... (and my age). ;)

The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)
The First Nudie Musical (1976)
The Groove Tube (1974)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)

I forgot to mention, there is a sequel to Donnie Darko that is supposed to come out this year. I believe it is direct to video. It is called S.Darko, which is his little sister Samantha. Could be good, could be bad, but I am interested in checking it out.

I watched the BD the other day, the theatrical cut and it looks and sounds great.

Ooo I forgot "Second Hand Lions" also a great selection. I don't see how they could make a sequal to Donnie Darko, Guess the lil girl in the original is the only one reprising her role as Samantha "How does one suck a F***?" Are they going to be bringing back the evil rabbit also. I find most sequels to suck (especially direct to video) and this one won't even compare to the original to even be a consideration.

Just read the Wikipedia review on S. darko and even the original director of Donnie refuses to be affiliated it with it, in any way, shape or form, That gives you a clue right there and yes they are bringing back Frank the Rabbit, which I found odd considering Donnie had Frank all in his head and we all know what happened to Donnie at the end and his sister knew nothing of Frank.

Been reading a few sites and it looks like no reviewer is happy about a sequel, i like the one guy who siad is this makes it, he'll have to write "No Country for Old Men 2"

I loved Kentucky Fried Movie back in the day. "The popcorn you are eating has been pissed in. Film at 11:00."

On another tangent, some old sci-fi recommendations...the remastered DVD of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, not the recent version), the original flying saucer movie; a sort-of remake, the long director's cut of The Abyss, in which the aliens are on the bottom of the ocean and another seminal FX film, the remastered version of The Forbidden Planet.

If that works, head for the bottom of the heap and get one of the most lovable, worst movies ever made, Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and it's excellent more recent tongue-in-cheek biopic twin, "Ed Wood", the making-of movie starring Johnny Depp as Wood and Martin Landau as the demented, morphine addicted Bela Lugosi.

Some good suggestions here.

I agree with Equilibrium and Bubba Ho-Tep. I really need to see My Name is Bruce, I find Campbell is hilarious and supposedly for fans of his this is a must see.

Speaking of Requiem for a Dream, I've yet to see that (I do own it, came bundled with Pi I think) but I have enjoyed a number of Aronofsky's other films (The Fountain and Pi were both very interesting).

I'd also suggest The Host which is a Korean monster film but there's a lot more to it than that. It's very well done.

I don't own it and I don't think I will but Punch Drunk Love is one I have to say I enjoyed but also in some ways didn't simply because it's really not my type of movie. Definitely interesting to see Sandler in that one.

UHF is a good one I think to go with too... it's just so strange yet very silly and fun.

A friend owns Fear of a Black Hat which is also pretty funny.

Donnie has 2 sisters, the older one who is the one who he had the "suck a f***" argument at the table with (played by Maggie, his real sister), and the younger one who was the dancer. I don't have high hopes for it, but I am sure it will be worth a rental.

The Host came highly recommended and I was very disappointed with it. Other than the creature, that movie had little going for it. I bought it, watched it twice, once myself and once with the kids to give it a second shot and I ended up trading it. I can't recommend this one.

I absolutely HATED Punch Drunk Love. Waste of my time.

I personally feel that Requiem for a Dream is Aronofski's best film.

I thought some of the jabs at America and the jokes on certain genres of films were pretty funny. There's a fair bit of drama in it and a reasonable amount of humor but some of it is subtle.

I liked The Fountain more than most people and definitely recomment is. Requiem For A Dream is dark and depressing but excellent, which leads me to The Wrestler, also done by Aronofsky, which has one of the best characters and portrayals in recent memory. It's said that Mickey Rourke acted for free.

I'd also suggest The Host which is a Korean monster film but there's a lot more to it than that. It's very well done.
I liked The Host...a good basic monster movie, with a message.

I asked about this a little while ago and I guess nobody was familiar with it, but tonight I stayed up against all good judgment to watch it.

I must highly recommend Let The Right One In.

It came out on blu-ray/DVD today, so check it out. It is good enough that it made the IMDb top 250 movies, and I concur. I am not going to say anything about it here (other than you will have to read subtitles or speak Swedish to understand it ;)), I am not a fan of talking to much about a movie to those who haven't seen it, so feel free to google it if need be :D.

I'm right there with you on that one man. To me it was just another terrible Japanese movie. Cool enough plot, terrible follow through.

Yeah Requiem for a dream was good *sarcasm*
other than me wanting to kill myself after the movie was over because it was so depressing. A true emo delight that one was.

Korean :) At least if it was Japanese it probably wouldn't have tried to hard to have EVERYTHING in it. It started off well enough, but IMO fizzled out about mid way.

LOL. That is exactly what I said after the first time I watched it, but I watched it again. It really is a very well done movie, despite the horrific nature of the material.

Yeah it's definitely not for everyone. I know some who love it and some who hate it, it does take a different approach from your average American monster/horror/suspense movies and it's also different from Japanese films.

Of all the movies listed here, I would pick Equilibrium is the best one; too bad it's not available on blu-ray yet.
