Great setup, Mike. I especially like the nearfield elegance! :)

Did you ever consider ES250 surrounds...or audition them? I'd be interested in your take.

tomorrow,

unfortunately, I have never demo'ed the ES250 surrounds ... I could not afford them then (a pair costs the same as 2 pairs of beta 10's) and still can't afford them now :)

I did consider replacing the rears with the ES250's ... but didn't get much support from posters in 2 forums :) everybody wanted me to just remove the rears totally. I on the other hand like the placebo effect of having 7.1 instead of the 5.1 I upgraded from.

You've just been talking to the wrong peeps, Mike, if they think 7.1 is poo-poo. I'm thinking these Beta ES250's will make it a virtual 9.1 and give that theater style wall-of-surround-sound magnificence to our little entertainment zones. It's just that I've never been able to find them anywhere to demo. I have all monopoles in a large room and all audio sources (except the subs) are easily localized.

I'm with you on the cash requirement. Man, I wish I just had enough dough to say "screw it...I'll get 'em and if I don't like 'em, I just sell 'em again". (HEY...there's an idea....maybe I will. You want to buy some used ES250's if I don't like them? :) )

actually, they think a crappy setup of 7.1 is no better than an ideal setup of 5.1.

they do have a point, but I have other intentions. psychologically, I feel satisfied that I have 7.1 whether it sounds worse or not.

if you shoulder shipping I would get them off your hands ... check my location :)

For the right price on the speakers, you bet I'll cover the shipping! :D

Purists! Humbug. They probably have OCD issues. ;) Even Gene is coming around to 7.1! (Or was it Clint?)

Man, I need 7.1. My front row isn't getting much in the way of surround. The back row on the other hand, is bliss, with nearfield bass to boot.

got them at amazon ... the spades are 20bucks US and the plugs are 15bucks US - only slightly more expensive than the radioshack ones so I got these because "monster cables make the speakers sound better" :) and they look better.

When I got banana plugs I remember reading so stupid crap about which terminations were better, of course wire by itself was the worst connection you could make, and apparently spades were the best.

Spades are the most mechanically sound (sturdy). I have locking Banana's on my mains, purely for looks (paid 80 bucks for them). All my amp channels have quick lock banana's so I can get speakers on and off quickly.

I like banana plugs for that purpose. When Meijer (supermarket in mid east US) starting liquidating there Lance Industries (Looks like Recoton similar to Acoustic Research) they had a shopping cart full of cables and connectors all for a dollar a piece I only had $11 so I bought 11 things. They printed the receipt and it said I save some $230 after savings.:D Among the things I got a 12ft Shielded Composite, 12ft S-video, some banana plugs, and two pair 12ft stereo RCA cables.

Here is a picture of the 12ft RCA cables-

custom made by an aluminum window installer (who apparently is also an AV addict) :)

it's actually easy to do, a t5 blue light, aluminum frame, and somebody who can engrave your glass.

53USD :)

Yo, Mike. If you find one that says "Tomorrow's Cinema" ....puhleeze send it my way. That looks great! (How come it doesn't say "Mr. & Mrs. Mike's Theater? :))

that's because it originally says "this home theater ..."

I said to the guy to change it to "mike's home theater ..." for the same price

"tomorrow" would be too long though :)

Is the glass sandblasted? Because I can do the sandblasting at work. Also what kind of a light base is that?

cheers:)

i think it's sandblasted ... its an aluminum channel with a T5 fluorescent light stuck inside. [sorry, not familiar with aluminum and glass ... steel is my business]
