How can you justify spending so much cash??

If you were buying AV stuff on a credit card then it would require justification :)

I fall in line with the guys that do it for the at home enjoyment of others and self, but mostly self. Actually for me I am a DIYer and building the speakers is 1/2 the fun. Having late nights out in my garage working with my hands and seeing a project come to completion is a great feeling. That makes all the expense of the project worth it.

In the long run (my oldest is 7) I hope my home is a place where my kids will want to bring their friends and hang out. My kids love movies more than I do, and I love watching them enjoy the system I have now.

I don't spend money on booze, drugs, or strippers and I am mormon, does that make it any different? ;)

Apparently you missed the post in this thread from Shintsu, if you still don't see the relevancy of the mormon post then that's cool, I wouldn't expect you to understand :)

While I love audio, I don't really like huge speakers. It seems like the bigger they get the more expensive they get & the UGLIER they get.:eek:

The only way they would come into my house would be if I had a huge house that where the monstrosities could have their own room that I wouldn't have to look at them.

Well, you're still the first I've seen. Any time I see equipment for sale on Craigslist or something the excuse is usually "wife made me sell this" so its cool that you wouldn't necessarily force someone to get rid of nice speakers in favor of some tiny Bose speakers (That's the one I normally see, recently it was some nice Def Tech speakers selling to get some Bose speakers because of the wife). So would you call the Carver speakers ugly? They're some of the biggest ones I know of:

Hey, I think Mormons are pretty cool. Although in all, I'm pretty religiously accepting of all faiths (Helped along by a further understanding by an Intro to World Religion class). :)

I'm generally absolutely baked posting on here. Like stuck to my listening chair with a laptop feeling so buttery that all I can do is surf and listen to tunes.

Although I surf at work sometimes/not high ... like now.

Who said anything about not spending money on strippers?:D

Not sure about strippers, but I know booze and drugs are prohibited for you, as a Mormon (not that all conform to this). I'd have a problem if they start telling people they can't use electronic equipment, though (especially since Stake Centers, Temples, etc use so much of it).

The times where I have to force myself to rationalize is a day like Black Friday when a sony tv 12 inches larger than mine is on sale for 300 less than I spent two years ago, and Best Buy is offering me 36 months interest free on the tv.... Do I NEED the TV? NO! Do I have anywhere to put the TV? NO! Do I WANT the TV? ABSOLUTELY!!

I definitely have a hard time though trying to figure out what I am willing to spend now for a given level of quality or performance when I know it is the stepping stone for something better/different.

A question that I am dealing with a lot right now is: Do I go with 1000-2000 towers now, knowing that some day I may want to invest in something even better? Or do I save money and get a pair of Behringer 2030P or Polk RTiA1 for 150 dollars just to get the complete surround sound experience, and wait/save until I can really go all out?

I think everyone's motivations are different, but the things that mean the most to you dictate what your fiscal, social, (and moral) priorities are, and hopefully that opportunity is given to everyone here and everywhere.
 
Well, from what I've learned there's one basic principle you should follow if you're not already a well cultured Audiophile:

Don't listen to a bunch of different speakers!

That's what turned the guy I know - with at least 30 pairs of speakers ranging from Linns, a full NIB KEF set, Klipsch LaScalas, just a whole plethora of amazing speakers (and he has most in storage being unused!) - into a total nut who couldn't be a better definition of the word Audioholic! In my life, I've listened to only a few sets of speakers so at my current stage - these Infinity speakers sound great. Nothing I've heard yet has made me think these particular speakers are lacking in any way. The only way it changes is by listening to lots of speakers (Which is fun, but can make you quite picky). My cost to satisfaction ratio on these speakers has got to be something crazy, although I've yet to develop a strong "pickiness" since I still thought my floorstanding KLH and Polk R50's sounded good too (Although both pairs were never properly setup the same way my speakers are now so that might have had an effect too). All I want is accurate imaging, and since listening to these speakers with my eyes closed sounds like Phil Collins (the only artist I've heard live) is singing in front of me, goal accomplished. I can't imagine what a speaker that can image even better than these would sound like (And I am certain plenty exist that do).

I honestly just totally avoid looking for deals when I have no money because it'll kill me. I just saw a pair of KEF Cresta 2 speakers on Craigslist for $80. They look like new and I'm sure sound great especially at that price. Do I need more speakers? No. Do I still want 'em? Yep. I could buy them if I wanted, but what really hurts is seeing some amazing speakers or something really cheap and then being broke...and it always happens that way too.
 
We were building our first house back in 2005-2006. We wanted to upgrade the counter tops to quartz, but we didn't have enough extra cash. I sold my Harley to bring in the needed funds. What didn't get used for the counters got spent on my two HT systems.
The money spent only adds up to about $0.50 per hour of entertainment. As the years go on, that number will decrease until I can no longer resist the urge to upgrade.

Speakers (7.1 and 6.1), 2 receivers, 2 projectors, a PS/3, HD-DVD, DVR, 2 DVR's, 2 subwoofers, and I still "get some" a couple times a week.

Thank you for the suspension. (I will bring the beer to the party as agreed)
