Harman Kardon Beats Denon

Prices are different there, and that's too bad. I don't know the circumstances of your situation at that moment, but there are some things to consider.

Was the Yamaha a surround receiver? There were a lot of features you had to pay for.

Was the Yamaha just a receiver? You still had to pay for the tuner.

Was the Denon an older outgoing model? This drops the price a good bit.

And lastly, it just might have been the deal of the day. All of us run into this on a daily basis, and we try to post our findings so people can get that good deal.

You said the Denon was $200. You said the Yamaha was 30% more. That makes it $260. No big deal. Depends on the features the end user was needing as to which was the better deal. I also doubt you were going to be able to get a Denon tuner for $60.
Both where regular listings the Yammy was 2 channel . My be the tuner took all power from the power supply to power the Yammy . Maybe thats why it couldnt perform .

Just to show you that Yamaha is not trying to rip people off, here is an example.

Denon 80x2 Integrated amp. Retail is $1200.00
http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/553.asp

Denon 80x2 receiver. Retail is $399.00
http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3364.asp

Yamaha 85x2 integrated amp. Retail is $449.95
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200108&CTID=5002300

Yamaha 75x2 receiver. Retail is $399.95
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200029&CTID=5000600

Can you spot the bargain here? Not so fast. To explain why this Denon integrated amp cost so much more than the Yamaha is easy. The Denon will do 160W@4ohm, while the Yamaha will only do 100W@4ohm. It all depends on the actual selling price someone could find.

Those are current products. Has nothing to do with your example. You are a stubborn one. It was an example to prove that Yamaha is not out to rip people off.

I totally understand that an integrated amp will out-perform an entry-level receiver.

That's it. When I get home tonight I'm going to slap my Yamahas around for a bit. How dare they.

Not defensive. For some strange reason, I feel the need to help you. As I said before, I find it hard to believe that you don't understand you were not comparing direct competing products.

If you take the engine out of the family car will all the options for everything, and put it in a frame with throttle and brakes, it's going to be faster. Doesn't matter what name is on the front bumper.

My Dad......Your Dad; My Mom.......Your Mom.

Come on!

I just read about 2/3rds of this thread and quit. As it got off the path @ the 4th page. Let's just say that personal taste and individual perception is the most important factor when buying something. Now if any of you wants to say "here this receiver X is better" and then actually go out and buy it for me then OK. How can I debate that, I didn't even shell out the coin for it so who cares.

Elvis1977, hats off to you for the thread title, that is really why it is over 20 pages long, 200+ replies and 6500+ views. I don't recall anyone for thanking Elvis, especially an administrator or more importantly one of the owners of the forum itself for getting such "play". This thread undoubtably caused some rift and probably caused some to actually join the forum in order to post.

I too have loved H/K for some time. I also have JBL and Infinity speakers, see sig. I got many of these for free or well below retail back in my days of CC employment. However, I have listened to many new speakers and have to say that for the $ JBL is still a pretty good bet.

Again this is like saying a blue display is better than a green or orange one, hey maybe I'll start that thread!

At least Elvis1977 took the time to try and set up a good A/B test. We can only mention and hope levels and such were somewhat equal. Remember that for most of us to even truely percieve a difference it has to be interpreted within 6-10 seconds from one another, just plain simple "human hearing memory".

Cheers.
