I have all JBL Studio series speakers.

If I were to upgrade...I would look into the AV123 Ref Series, or Axiom Audio in the $2000-$3000 price range. I would try to get the entire 7.1 set up at once (if $$$ allows)

Rives is giving away three (3) Rives Audio Test CD 2 this month in our dedicated forum contest.

To be eligible to win, you must: 1) Be a registered Audioholics forum member, 2) Have USA or Canadian Residence 3) Answer the questions in this contest thread:

Contest Question: What type of speakers are your mains (left and right channel)? Monitor, Planar, Horn, In/on wall, etc.? If you were to shop for new main speakers (for either a two channel or home theater setup) what would you think you'd have to spend to get an acceptable quality of speaker?

Note this contest ends on January 31st 2007. Winners will be drawn shortly thereafter.

Have fun and good luck!
my current set up I'm using Athena bookshelf as-b2's as mains and as-b1's for surround along with the centre channel from that series. I am very determined to upgrade the front sound stage later this year and run a 7.1 set up, therfore $1500.00(not including sub) doesn't seem out of the question.;)

Big old Onkyo three way speakers that came with a system I bought back in the late 80's.

Being a cheap bastard, I am sure I could find something acceptable in the $200 price range.

I've got two towers - Polk RTi10's with a single soft dome, a 6.5" midbass driver, and twin 7" sub bass drivers.

If I was buying new mains (they'd have to match my other 5 speaker which are Polk BTW), I'd basically have to sell my entire 7.1 setup. I would look for more efficient speakers (something 91dB or higher and 8 ohms), most likely a bookshelf since the subwoofer takes care of most of the sub 120Hz bass anymore. I would think a good pair of bookshelves could be had for under $180 each (maybe $500 - $600 for an entire 5 speaker setup).

I have fairly top-end Klipsch speakers throughout (L,C,R,SL,SR) that are about 10 years old. Don't (off the top of my head) remember the model numbers but they were around $3000 purchased new. I have a Definitive subsoofer (also about 10 years old), which I paid around $1500 for.

Not too happy with the subwoofer's distortion levels (though could be poor calibrations). Considering one of the top-end Axiom subs with DSP. I would expect to pay as much, if not more, for good quality speakers as I've paid in the past, perhaps $1200 to $1500 a pair. And as I've had mine for 10 years now, I'm about there. But not enough money yet.

Sure could use your test CD though. ;)

My mains have a 12" woofer with a mid and tweeter. They are old and worn. If I was buying new ones I'd expect to buy a pair for around $1000 each.

I currently have three way floor standers, Montana SPX left/right and a Montana SPC center channel. The center channel is a monster at 115 lbs but what sound they produce for movies and multi channel SACD and DVD-A. I think you can get a pretty good set of speakers from about 3000/pr .

I don't know a planar from a planer. Please don't confuse us novices with trick questions.
But seriously, I bought the speakers from the Audioholics $1000 Home Theater recommendation. Athena Micra6. (and thanks for that advice)

I'm thinking that $500 for a pair of speakers for vinyl records and cd listening would be about all I could spend.

My mains are monitors. I just purchased new mains (or rather am waiting for them to arrive at the shop) which are also monitors, for $1000 a pair. I think I could find speakers of an acceptable quality at a broad range of prices depending on what I wanted.

To replace my new mains for my two channel system I'd expect to probably at least double the budget to replace them with what I'd want to feel I've made a significant improvement (having already listened to some things that I could see as suitable upgrades down the road). I'd basically be looking in the $2000-3000 range (I'd be looking at Totems like the Hawks or Forests, and some other things). For home theater I'd be somewhat less picky but since I'd be more than likely to look at floorstanders again it might push me up to around $1000 for the mains as well. I'd be happy with Axioms such as the M60s with which I could use a set of M3Tis I already have for rears.

Mine are Infinity Kappa 9's Wow I would hate to have to try to replace them. If I did I would probably have to scale down the size and the price!

I currently own a pair of PSB Century 600i's floorstanders for main left/right speakers.

If I were to upgrade with my funds... I would probably get B&W's 600 series or if money was no object, maybe some Maggies or Martin Logan.

Good quality speakers start at around $600 USD... and from there it's what I can afford.

My main speakers are B&W 601 S2 bookshelf speakers. I've been considering an upgrade to my main speakers, and I think I would end up getting larger bookshelf speakers (+ a sub). For the main L/R, I'd be looking to spend about $1000 or a bit less per pair.

i currently have paradigm studio 60 v.3's for my 2-channel setup. upgrading would be to either paradigm studio 100 v.3's or b&w 805s's (i love bookshelf speakers). price for an acceptable quality speaker starts at $800 (paradigm studio 20 v.3's are amazing speakers for the money).

I am using Definitive Technology BP30 floor standing bi-polar speakers as my L/R mains. I will be hard pressed to go through any upgrade to these speakers for a while as the cost involved in any serious sound upgrade would likely run my $2,000 or more for a pair of speakers that could best them.

I would consider things like Sonance Silohette speakers which are a very high end in-wall design as I listen in my family room and the large Def Techs are just sitting out in the open. But, we are even beyond that 2 grand for me to get the Sonance speakers.

Of course, some really nice B&Ws are always a killer addition... Not exactly a cheap addition either.

Main speakers are floor standing. On-wall would be nice but the performance just isn't there.

I'm not sure what type of mains my speakers are, they are Polk audio RT3 bookshelf speakers. Does that make them monitors being they have a 5.25 driver and 3/4 softdome tweeter? My next pair of mains will most likely be ID from Axiom/AV123/ or Ascend. I would probably find an acceptable pair for under $500.00 for bookshelf speakers. Space constraints won't allow for floorstanders.
