placement is the most important aspect of getting great performance out of a sub

The most important factor is not on there... Chosing the correct size of the sub for the room is really the most important aspect to achieving the best sound. An 8" in a large room sounds no better than tower speakers...a 15" in a small room will sound muddy.

With the factors up there...Placement is the most important. Things like speaker cables are great to look at, but as long as you don't have a crappy cable...you should be alright.

My two choices were proper subwoofer placement and choosing the right subwoofer cable. The first response is probably self-explanatory as placement is key...I don't know who would argue that point.

However, cable choice wasn't chosen a lot. I chose it because I had an issue with my subwoofer cable. When I moved into my new house, I connected my sub using in-wall cable that I ran while the house was under construction. The sub would perform fine when everything was on and it was getting a signal. When I would turn off the receiver, however, I would get this hum that immediately went away when I turned the receiver back on. I switched from the in-wall cabling to a sub cable that I had lying around and the hum would still appear. Only after switching to a high-quality, well-insulated cable did the him disappear. This might go overlooked by some but using a cheap cable can have bad consequences.

Of the provided choices, subwoofer placement is #1, auto EQ is #2.

I believe the most important factor in ensurance smooth bass response across all areas of the room is proper subwoofer placement. But, for music, I think the only way to get a continuous level of all frequencies across various areas of the room is to have a 5 speaker full-range floorstanding system. I'd much prefer a properly placed subwoofer in an audio-treated room than 5 full-range speakers, however.

I believe in proper placement which avoids dips caused by room modes, and using some sort of adjustable EQ to chop off any peaks. That should be the easiest...unless you can move your room walls and ceiling ;)

In my opinion, proper placement and proper sizing are the two most important with an adjustable EQ, not the auto as listed, being a close third. If you place the sub wrong, or have a sub too small, it makes it hard to get the right sound/output level

Definitly placement being the biggest factor here. The sounds differences are amazing. Also using the EQ too but really the placement

I would think that the two simplest ways to improve a smooth bass performance is the placement and a set of bass traps. I have used them in a couple different times for myself and others' theaters and it makes a difference immediately.

as expected, placement is the factor most of the members in this forum say is the most important factor in getting maximum sub performance. and they are correct..................in a perfect world. If all things are equal, placement is the best way to get the best sub performance. Most of us live in a real-world setting that doesnt allow for multiple choices for sub placement. we are "stuck" with couches, end tables, plants (yikes!) and other room decorations that prevent us from ever achieving an ideal sub location. For this reason, a parametric EQ or auto EQ has become the most useful feature when it comes to getting the most out of your woofer.

Placement and then eq is what everyone seems to be doing/recommending

Placement is a given, everyone knows that. For my big room(23.8'x30') it ask too much of one sub to fill properly. I have a cerwin vega LW12 that was fine in my other house (13x15). Now its watered down & not as much fun.:(

I think proper sub placement as well as using multiple subs contribute to smooth bass. you could use a 12" or 15" sub for the real lows in conjunction with a 10" to blend into the "higher" bass. When combined with great room placement, great smooth bass will be plentiful :)

Of the various choices, I like multiple subs the best (but that's normally too much money). Room placement is my second choice for perfecting the sub experience (it applies to either one or multiple subs).

I believe that Sub placement and equalization are the best approaches to maximizing output and tuning the output, but dual subs are always helpful.

I'd guess pretty much all of us 'holics believe placement to be #1 and also the hardest to acheive correctly. For funky rooms an extra sub can smooth things out nicely though.....
Cheers!

Proper placement, full range speakers help.

Proper placement of the sub is important, as well as proper set up of the the crossover and volume adjustments. I recommend using full range speakers to limit the sub's duties to only the very lowest range of frequencies.
